The Opportunity

Our NGTL Operations group in Northern Alberta is seeking an experienced Pipeline Technician to join the team, based in Athabasca, AB. Pipeline Technicians operate, maintain, test, and inspect our natural gas pipeline, valves & operators and associated pipeline building assemblies in a manner which meets operational needs in compliance with company and regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Pipeline Manager, NGTL Operations (NE Alberta), this position requires the application of mechanical and technical skills to keep our natural gas compressor stations, measurement stations, and pipeline sites running smoothly and will act as the primary isolation coordinator.

The regular work schedule will be:

  • Week 1 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is an 8-hour day
  • Week 2 - Monday to Thursday 9 hours / day; Friday is a Regular Day Off (RDO)
  • Overtime averages ~30% per year with project days averaging 12 hours / day

What you'll do

  • Ensure facilities and personnel comply with TransCanada's safety, health, environment, and risk standards
  • Perform inspections related to valve servicing, troubleshooting and repair
  • Assist with all aspects of pipeline isolation and gas handling
  • Support various tasks associated with inline inspection
  • Perform basic One Call line locates
  • Assist with all types of Line Crossings (foreign or seismic) of TC Energy Pipe Assets
  • Identify encroachment issues

Minimum Qualifications

  • Journeyman certification in a trade (i.e., Millwright, HD Mechanic) or two years of post-secondary training in a related field
  • 5 years relevant work experience related to Pipelines
  • Other combinations of education and work experience may also be considered
  • Excellent work safety record and a safe work attitude

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with valve operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair
  • Experience operating and maintaining high pressure natural gas pipelines and/or facilities
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and/or SAP experience

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (record) for review
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training will be required (estimated up 70% of work schedule)
  • Be part of an on-call rotation and provide emergency support as required
  • Be subject to working conditions which include adverse weather and temperatures

Relocation Eligibility: This position is eligible for our domestic relocation program.
