PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Engineer in Training Wayside Detector Systems is responsible for the development and support of CPKC's wayside detector network. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: detector selection and procurement, detector end-to-end installation, ensuring a 99.9% detector network uptime including coordinating repairs, expansion of back-office rules for continuous improvement of railway safety, and conceptualization of new detector designs to solve railway problems. The position must also coordinate with Railway Technology and Mechanical Car team members to provide inputs into train dynamics simulations, incident investigations, and service interruption drilldowns such that root causes and associated corrective actions can be determined quickly.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Develop an expertise in wayside detector systems (ex. WILD, HBD, TADS, TIPS)
• Implement detector installations from design to construction
• Work with 3rd party vendors for detector support while minimizing support costs through development of internal maintenance and calibration procedures
• Monitor the wayside detector network and address issues by coordinating with field staff
• Analyze data to identify opportunities to improve railway safety and efficiency by adhering to CP's foundations
• Conceptualize new and innovative detectors to improve railway safety and efficiency through internal and external support
• Work collaboratively between the mechanical, engineering and operating departments to deliver value to the business
• Work with CPKC's Information Systems (IS) department to implement rules and models from conception into production
• Adhere to CPKC's health and safety policy.


POSITION SKILLS:
• Ability to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;
• Ability to coordinate and support field installations of technology;
• Ability to perform data analysis;
• Ability to improve and support development of business rules, and/or incorporate new technologies to improve safety and operational efficiency;
• Ability to record data and support calculations of accuracy and reliability statistics;
• Ability and drive to drill down to determine root causes of incidents;
• Ability to work on parallel projects;
• Ability to work outside of defined scopes and diverse projects;
• Willingness to learn and think outside the box;
• Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal;
• Desire to develop into a people leader;

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
• Must have an Engineering degree from an accredited university in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace or similar discipline OR a minimum of 5 years' experience with wayside detectors in the rail industry;
• Must have experience designing and implementing technology from a prototype to production system;
• Must have industry experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software;
• Must have industry experience performing analysis and drilldowns using available data
• Must be proficient with MS Office (specifically Word and Excel);
• Hands-on experience with Track and Welding an asset;
• Other practical hands-on experience (automotive repair, robotics, furniture) an asset;
• Operational environment experience drilling down and driving solutions an asset;
• Ability to travel mostly to domestic locations and respond to calls occasionally after hours and on weekends;
• Must be able to write clear and concise reports which will be distributed to high level management;
• Must hold a full stage Class 5 driver's permit;
• Must have the ability to work in Canada;
• Must hold a Canadian Passport or Unites States with the ability to travel to the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.

Management Conductor Program:

Your day-to-day tasks will involve using sophisticated simulation tools to model and predict the dynamic responses of trains, translating these insights into practical design and operational recommendations. You will work closely with operations to ensure trains are built and operated safely, ensuring that new designs meet performance and safety benchmarks. Your role will also encompass monitoring and analyzing the dynamic performance of trains in service, identifying areas where performance can be improved and implementing solutions and operational recommendations.

Safety is a paramount aspect of your job. You will ensure all dynamic behaviors and changes comply with relevant safety standards and regulations, contributing to an overall safer rail system.

Your expertise will be pivotal in cross-functional teams, working alongside other engineering disciplines, operational staff, and maintenance crews to implement holistic solutions that address the multifaceted challenges of train dynamics. You will be a key figure in driving research and development initiatives, staying abreast of the latest technological advances, and applying cutting-edge innovations to our train systems.

Preparing detailed reports, technical documentation, and presentations will be a regular part of your role, aimed at communicating your findings and recommendations to stakeholders and decision-makers. Moreover, you will have opportunities to mentor and train junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and ensuring that best practices in train dynamics are maintained across the organization.
