The Regulatory and Transmission Services Team provides regulatory, mapping, geospatial analysis and cost support to connection and system projects. As stewards of the AESO connection and system processes, we produce and maintain process documentation and tools. We manage change across the Grid Reliability Projects and Planning department and always strive for efficiency.

The GIS Analyst will manage and maintain the corporate ESRI ArcGIS database and the AESO's GIS data; create and maintain custom spatial products including single line diagrams (SLDs), maps and Google Earth services; develop and maintain interactive ArcGIS Online tools such as the transmission capability map and connection project map, and conduct geospatial corridor analysis to support the evaluation of transmission alternatives.

The position coordinates cross functionally with other technical specialists within the Grid Reliability business unit, including project management, engineering, and regulatory disciplines, and is engaged with team members in business groups that specialize in system operations, forecasting, IT, analytics, and stakeholder relations. This role communicates with external parties, such as TFOs, DFOs, Market Participants, WECC and other stakeholders.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Applying industry best practices, methods and tools to develop and maintain spatial databases and products.

  • Timely production and continuous improvement of maps, SLDs, digital products, and multi-criteria data assessment tools.

  • Proactively identifying and implementing improvements to spatial products and services.

  • Developing and maintaining a clear understanding of the AESO connection, system and cluster assessment processes.

  • Delivering high-quality spatial products while maintaining project delivery schedules.

  • Collaborating with subject matter experts to enhance the quality and presentation of spatial products.

  • Maintaining productive and positive working relationships with AESO staff and external parties.

  • Preparing, maintaining, and refining map and SLD templates. Developing new map and SLD templates as required.

What you'll bring to us:

  • University degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Geography, Geoscience, Geomatics, Environmental Science or a related field.

  • GIS certification with applicable work experience may be considered. Previous utility experience is considered an asset.

  • 1 to 2 years working experience.

The following are essential to succeed in this role:

  • Strong understanding of ESRI ArcGIS Database systems, including ArcDesktop, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online.

  • Experience with Arcade, Python, or JavaScript programming languages would be considered assets.

  • Experience with ArcGIS ModelBuilder and ArcGIS for Power BI would be considered assets.

  • Experience with spatial overlay analysis, ArcSchematics extension, Spatial Analyst extension and Sharepoint Online would be considered assets.

  • Demonstrated project management skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities concurrently and meet defined time lines.

  • Ability to work with limited direction at a professional level of responsibility, independently and within a team environment.

  • Driven to personally achieve quality results in a timely and effective manner.
