About this opportunity:

In this role you will provide technical support to Cenovus's western Canada upstream and downstream operations on water issues, with focus on groundwater. This includes water source and disposal development and management; groundwater characterization, risk assessment, and monitoring; water management planning; and, water policy assessment. This role requires liaison with internal and external partners. You will perform technical work and at times manage third party experts. Strong technical skills, flexibility, communication, and collaboration are key!

What you'll do:

  • Provide hydrogeological expertise for drilling, completions, production (conventional and in situ oil sands) and refining activities to support regulatory compliance and the protection of freshwater resources, primarily in Western Canada

  • Complete technical work in support of the development and operation of deep aquifer groundwater supply and disposal

  • Complete and/or manage hydrogeologic assessments for regulatory applications, groundwater monitoring programs and groundwater investigations

  • Characterize, assess, and manage groundwater risk from surface and subsurface activities

  • Oversee domestic water well investigations

  • Develop water management plans for operations in support of Cenovus's water security and water stewardship initiatives

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada

  • Bachelor of Science in Geology/Earth Sciences or Geological/Environmental Engineering

  • Registered as a P.Geo. or P.Eng. with APEGA

  • 4+ years hydrogeology experience (desktop and field)

  • Current with Alberta water-related regulations and industry best practices

  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills

  • Familiar with petroleum industry operations

  • Skills specific to geologic mapping, groundwater modelling, and/or hydrogeochemistry is considered an asset

  • A combination of experience and education may be considered
