The Opportunity

Since 2003, Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) has been acting as the research arm of Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), one of Canada's top research colleges. Using 50,000 square feet of specialized lab space located at the heart of Calgary and more than 60 research staff, ARIS provides a wide range of research and innovation services to industries in Alberta and across Canada. The Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM) is ARIS' newest centre dedicated to advanced research in the areas of manufacturing, materials, robotics, and advanced design. CIRAMM is currently in search for a motivated red seal machinist to assist with supervising CIRAMM's manufacturing lab spaces and CIRAMM's ongoing and upcoming applied research projects. Below is a summary of the job description and required qualifications. Those who are short listed will be contacted for an interview. Please note that this is 2-year employment opportunity with the possibility of extension.

The Role

    • Oversee day-to-day operations of lab spaces and ensure:
    • smooth functionality of all equipment.
    • adherence to safety standards and protocols across all lab operations.
    • lab staff, students, and external partners are trained in proper use of equipment and safety protocols.
    • Operate and maintain various manufacturing systems, including:
    • 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines.
    • CNC lathes and manual lathe/mill machines.
    • Furnaces, manufacturing, and materials processing systems.
    • 3D printers (various types).
    • Conduct regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
    • Develop and update documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), manuals, and technical reports.
    • Liaise with industry partners to identify challenges and collaboratively develop solutions.
    • Contribute to research and innovation initiatives within the lab environment and assist in fabrication projects, providing hands-on support as needed.
    • To perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

    • Minimum
    • Red seal certification as a machinist
    • Preferred
    • Extensive experience operating 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines, CNC lathes, and manual lathes/mills.

    • Skills Required
    • Red Seal Certification as a machinist.
    • Extensive experience operating 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines, CNC lathes, and manual lathes/mills.
    • Proficiency in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks) and CAM software, particularly Mastercam programming for 3-axis and 5-axis machining.
    • Knowledge of 3D printing processes (training can be provided if needed).
    • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues.
    • Passion for research, innovation, and continuous learning.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Experience with fabrication and assembly projects is an asset.
    • Excellent communication skills for liaising with both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Commitment to maintaining high safety standards and compliance with relevant regulations.
    • Can work independently while being a team player.
