The Opportunity
The Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM) is ARIS' newest centre dedicated to advanced research in the areas of manufacturing and materials science.
This position will provide laboratory support for CIRAMM's low-carbon concrete 3D printing projects. The laboratory technician will also assist with daily laboratory activities including safety, housekeeping, training, operating lab equipment, documentation, and reporting. This position will assist project managers at CIRAMM with their applied research projects.
The Role
Conduct experiments to assess fresh and hardened concrete properties
Conduct comprehensive analyses of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM)-based concrete mixes, focusing on mechanical performance through compressive, tensile, and flexural strength testing
Perform visual evaluations on casted and printed concrete samples and participate in assessments to determine print quality and shape stability
Utilize advanced analytical techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), to examine 3DPC materials at the microstructural level
Implement Design of Experiments (DoE) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM)-driven experimentation to optimize concrete mix designs, ensuring print quality, shape stability, and consistency
Perform literature reviews to support guidelines for low-carbon concrete applications in 3D printing, referencing ASTM and ISO standards
Compile and interpret research findings for knowledge dissemination, engaging with clients and project stakeholders.
Carry out Experimental activities and laboratory test procedures
Maintain and repair laboratory equipment
Maintain an inventory of materials
Assists in documenting project phases and creating summary reports
Works with field personnel to handle project issues as they arise
Writes and edits scientific publications and reports
Qualifications
Minimum
Civil Engineering Technologist Diploma (currently enrolled or within one year of graduation)
Preferred
Master's or PhD in Civil Engineering (currently enrolled or within one year of graduation) with a focus on construction materials science or closely related field
Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of concrete properties, SCMs, admixtures, and quality control practices
Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE), Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and other statistical analysis tools
Proficiency in advanced lab techniques, including SEM, concrete casting, and microstructural analysis
Strong analytical skills and familiarity with ASTM standards for concrete testing
Excellent communication skills for compiling research data and presenting findings to project stakeholders
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team environment
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow experimental procedures
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) for data compilation and report preparation
Proficiency in Statically Analysis software such as jmp, SPSS, MATLAB, Origin, or Minitab is an asset
Willingness to engage in hands-on testing and collaborative research work
