We are currently seeking a Senior Power System Studies Engineer with a track record in delivering system studies projects specially for inverter-based resource (IBRs) projects such as PV, BESS, and wind farm. This is a meaningful role to help Arup establish its power system studies function in Canada. You will work with a growing energy team; striving to support renewable developers, ISO/RTO, transmission developers, government agencies and utilities. We are looking for a highly skilled and innovative engineer who leaves a strong positive impression on clients and one who has a vision and insight to deliver excellence. This role would provide hands-on delivery of power system studies mainly including generation and load interconnection studies, load flow studies, transfer analysis, and short circuit studies.

We currently have significant international experience in this area for renewable projects and major transmission interconnectors and are looking to grow that in Canada in the next five years. Our growth will be achieved from a combination of delivery of technical excellence, development of select intellectual property and key client relationships on gigawatt-scale power developments.

  • Developing Power System models for renewable resources including BESS, PV, WF or equivalent experience.
  • Performing steady state studies and EMT studies related to interconnection process of Generations and Loads.
  • Conducting power system studies: sub-synchronous resonance studies, TRV, switching and lightning, insulation coordination, TOV, protection coordination, and arc flash studies.
  • Performing NERC compliance verifications for PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027.
  • Review and modify IBRs models as needed for project-specific applications.
  • Remain up to date with ISO/RTO shifting market rules associated with system studies, reliability and other interconnection requirements.
  • Assist in developing new automated techniques to optimize the studies work and deliver efficiency and quality.
  • Proven quality check of models and results to maintain the highest level of quality services
  • Produce and/or review quality technical reports and presentations for both internal and external clients.
  • Internally collaborating and proactively engaging with clients and contractors to prepare high-quality, technically efficient and cost-effective project solutions.
  • Developing and maintaining good working relationships with clients and partners.
  • Supporting/preparing proposal for customers and clients.

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; an advanced degree or equivalent experience (Master's or PhD) is highly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in delivering power system studies with focus of IBRs.
  • Validated knowledge and understanding of the NERC and FERC compliance requirements and/or ISOs' interconnection or transmission planning guidelines.
  • Proficient in PSS/E and PSCAD/EMTDC. Experience in Aspen OneLiner, PowerGem TARA, or PSLF is considered a plus.
  • Ability to conduct and deliver steady state and transient stability.
  • Experience automating/programming in Python.
  • Strong technical reporting skills including reporting complex system analysis
  • Sound industry networks among potential client market and a significant reputation in a relevant area of expertise.
  • The ability to prioritize work optimally and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills crucial for team-based working.
  • Effective presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels.
  • Must be highly motivated, proactive and willing to tackle new challenges.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Calgary is $90,000 to $120,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Calgary will differ.
