Cenovus is currently looking for a Staff Development Engineer to join our Development Engineering team in Calgary!

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Development Engineering, and working with an integrated team, the Staff Development Engineer is responsible for managing competitor evaluations and quantifying production ranges across our CTCHO assets.

The successful candidate will work with a cross functional team to develop and analyze models for competitor evaluation, conduct economic analyses, and participate in A&D discussions. They will also collaborate with our decision analysis team and technical subject matter experts (SMEs) to establish a workflow for integrating a range of uncertainties into our CTCHO models. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to serve as the Business Opportunity Manager for one of our annual programs and contribute to a variety of asset-spanning projects.

What you'll do:

Competitor Evaluation

  • Collaborate with a diverse team of technical subject matter experts (SMEs) to align on inputs for developing predictive models of competitor activity.

  • Build development model to forecast production, capital expenditures, and operational expenditures (OPEX) to support economic evaluations.

  • Gain proficiency in business development acquisition workflows, allowing for the effective assessment of various operating strategies.

  • Frame and evaluate retain vs sell value propositions to guide strategic decision making

  • Create and maintain a centralized repository of competitor models to streamline responses to ad hoc evaluation requests.

Quantifying Production Ranges for CTCHO Assets

  • Partner with the Decision Analysis team to create an effective workflow for visualizing and quantifying uncertainty within our CTCHO development models.

  • Facilitate the quantification of near-term and long-term production ranges for thermal and conventional heavy oil assets by collaborating with geoscience, reservoir engineering, and process engineering teams. Drive complex discussions among stakeholders to achieve consensus on outcomes.

  • Integrate insights from the Long Range Outlook Improvement Project team's long-term analyses with current near-term uncertainty assessments to provide a comprehensive current perspective.

  • Due to the complexity of our development plans (and interdependency of uncertainties), communicating the rationale behind the changes will be important to generate buy-in by senior leaders and implementation for LRP submissions.

  • Develop a streamlined process that aligns with existing Long-Range Planning (LRP) deliverables, ensuring regular updates with minimal additional effort inclusive of documentation of the process.

  • Influence cross-functional teams to strategize and evaluate options and alternatives, enhancing overall success.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) accredited with APEGA or other Provincial Professional Organization is required

  • 12+ years of experience in the oil & gas industry, with a preference for Conventional Heavy Oil or SAGD expertise.

  • Advanced problem-solving and critical-thinking skills in either Reservoir/Development engineering, Production Engineering or Facilities Engineering with depth of knowledge in multiple subsurface fields.

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in team settings and influence others without direct authority.

  • Experience in long-range planning, economic analysis, and statistical analysis.

  • Advanced understanding of statistics & probabilities and application of risk and uncertainty into our development plans will be critical.

  • Communicates complex information, clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

  • Effective time management and prioritization skills to deliver upon deadlines.

  • Proactive and results-oriented, capable of focusing on high-impact activities (80/20 principle) and working independently as a self-starter.
