About this opportunity:
Working with Reservoir Optimization leadership team, you will analyze well and reservoir operating data and implement specific strategies to improve long-term reservoir performance. This is a fast-paced & high-accountability environment, where you will play a key role in support of Cenovus' thermal growth plans.
Members of the Reservoir Optimization team are primarily tasked with optimizing a group of pads while working with a multi-disciplinary team of geoscientists and production engineers. As a supplement to traditional analysis methods, reservoir simulation and history matching work will be required to properly evaluate some of the opportunities. The team is responsible for optimizing all of Cenovus' Thermal fields: Foster Creek, Christina Lake, Sunrise, and (12) Lloydminster-area SAGD projects. You will be accountable for pads spanning several of these properties.
In addition to the optimization responsibilities on your assigned pads, you will have the opportunity to make steam and gas prioritization recommendations to optimize steam (~1 MMboe/d) and gas (~3 e3m3/d) injection at both Foster Creek and Christiana Lake to optimize SOR and ensure adequate steam is available to start-up new pads. This role leads a process that involves a multi-disciplinary team of production, reservoir and process engineers to identify and progress innovative opportunities for long term gas management.
What you'll do:
Reservoir Optimization
Leads holistic approach to manage FCCL gas and steam targets and allocations on a monthly basis by compiling input from production and reservoir optimization engineering, collaborating with pad teams and recommending target pressures to maintain reservoir health and optimize SOR
Identifies discrepancies in gas and steam actuals vs forecasts and collaborates with teams to troubleshoot and address
Manages scope for FCCL gas injection infrastructure by identifying pads and desired timing to the execution teams, integrating timing into the gas/steam optimization workflow and communicating for inclusion in our business plans
Work with Pad Teams of geoscientists and production engineers to action opportunities to improve conformance, reduce SOR, increase production/recovery, and minimize impacts of bottom water and thief zones
Coordinate performance reviews on assigned base pads and mentor less experienced staff on base pads. This includes production comparisons to forecasts, tracking recovery vs time and sharing knowledge of key observations and learnings
Reservoir Modeling
Develop and history match models to understand and forecast pad performance to identify and evaluate potential value add optimization opportunities (operating strategy refinement, well placement, SOR management, and late life ramp down/blowdown strategies etc).
Redevelopment & Redrill Well Planning
Evaluate redrill opportunities on assigned operating pads and develop forecasts and economic evaluations in support of those candidates
Technical Mentorship
Help to increase the technical bench strength of the team through mentorship of less experienced staff and contributing to knowledge sharing
Continuous Technical Improvement:
Identify and progress studies and field trials to continuously optimize performance in support of operating strategy advancement and technology progression. This includes a learning plan, analyzing results and lookback analysis to document key learnings and transition to commercialization where applicable.
Collaborate with Geology & Geophysics, Production, Reservoir Development, Drilling & Completions, Facility & Process Engineering, Projects, and external partners (regulators, technology solution vendors etc.)
Continuously refine standards and influence best practices for the broader thermal reservoir community (including well placement, completion designs, liner specifications, well operating strategies, etc.)
Who you are:
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
Legally authorized to work in Canada
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) accredited with APEGA or other Provincial Professional Organization is required
12+ years of oil & gas industry experience is required
Preference for candidates with a minimum 5 years SAGD thermal experience or other enhanced oil recovery experience in a subsurface role (e.g., reservoir, exploitation, or production engineering)
Advanced skills in Reservoir Technical Competencies with depth of knowledge of multiple subsurface disciplines
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and ability to influence others without formal authority
Communicates complex information, clearly and concisely to diverse audience
Demonstrated capacity to learn new concepts quickly and drive for continuous improvement
Models the values of Cenovus in all interactions and activities
The following training/certificates will be considered an asset
Working knowledge of reservoir simulation (Cenovus Sapsim, CMG STARS, SLB Intersect, or an equivalent thermal simulation software package)
Experience programming in one or more languages (Python, R, VBA, Matlab, C++, SQL, etc.)
We acknowledge the value of transferrable skills and may consider equivalent combinations of experience and education should you not meet a specific requirement.
Note: The application deadline for this position is 11:59 PM MT, December 2nd, 2024.
