Reporting to the Manager of Operations Engineering, the Sustaining Capital Development Engineer will develop projects that support the continuation of safe and reliable operations and regulatory compliance at Gibson Energy as an integral part of the Sustaining Capital team.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Completes or coordinates timely development of Sustaining Capital Projects in brownfield conditions at Gibson's assets (terminals, pipelines, and processing facilities in Hardisty, Edmonton, Moose Jaw, and Texas).
  • Provides project scoping, and development of pre-FEED deliverables including cost estimates and schedules on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Manages 3rd party engineering contractors on more complex scopes to complete Front End Engineering Design (FEED) Studies up to and including fully developed DBM packages and Class 3 estimates.
  • Promotes "right-sized" engineering design, creative and pragmatic solutions, and consistency through engineering design principles and expertise.
  • Recognizes and integrates multidisciplinary and cross-functional stakeholder inputs to develop solutions to complex challenges to meet business objectives.
  • Develops and fosters strong, collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. Operations, Operations Engineering, Maintenance, Project Managers, Engineering contractors, etc.).
  • Conducts various reviews with project stakeholders across the organization to ensure internal customers' needs and expectations are addressed by proposed project's identified scope.
  • Minimizes risks through early identification, planning, and proactive project management practices.
  • Ensures all projects are developed in compliance with the applicable regulations and standards and executed in compliance with Gibson Energy's Asset Delivery Framework (ADF).
  • Acts as a resource for execution Project Managers and team members with less experience.
  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of work processes in support of Gibson Energy's Operations Management System (OMS).
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.


What You Will Bring

  • Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering or a similar field and current APEGA or APEGS membership as a practicing member (P.Eng.) in good standing is required.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in development, design and construction of heavy oil upgrading facilities, major crude oil terminals and pipelines, and/or NGL/refined product storage and handling facilities, preferably in capital maintenance related roles.
  • Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates and applies knowledge of strategies that can be deployed within areas of engineering design and project management.
  • Exhibits in-depth knowledge of relevant codes (ABSA, ASME, CSA, API, NACE, etc.) and other technical regulations, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Has a proven track record of developing effective relationships with operations teams through proactive understanding of operational needs and challenges.
  • Thrives in fast paced environments, with multiple competing priorities, supporting in parallel needs of several different assets.
  • Highly collaborative, ensuring active and timely engagement with multiple stakeholders from different assets and functions.


Working Conditions

  • This is an office based position with travel to project site locations required up to 25% of the time.
  • When employees are outside of the office, they must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the company's safety policies and as required for weather conditions.
