NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

We are seeking a Research Technologist to join our Catalyst Research and Development team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR). This team focuses on creating innovative catalysts that drive the production of olefin feedstocks and new polyethylene-based polymers with enhanced performance attributes. Additionally, the team actively seeks solutions to align with our goals of circularity and climate care.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Understand and apply Responsible Care® principles, practices, and procedures in all aspects of your work.
  • Conduct multi-step synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic, main-group, and transition metal compounds using traditional and high throughput experimentation techniques.
  • Support the scale-up of new catalyst technologies, including optimization of synthetic processes (with guidance) and preparation of materials required for technical and pilot scale evaluations.
  • Use conventional analytical techniques to characterize molecular and/or solid-state materials.
  • Accurately document experimental procedures, results, and observations in an electronic lab notebook (ELN) to ensure reproducibility and compliance with laboratory standards and recordkeeping practices.
  • Write and contribute to reports describing results, technical progress, and recommended future work.
  • Support the creation, review, and maintenance of laboratory operating procedures.
  • Support the upkeep and preventative maintenance of standard laboratory equipment, including gloveboxes, vacuum pumps, solvent purification systems, and other equipment.
  • Present work activities and progress to project team and leadership.
  • Integrate into our high-performing team through teaching, sharing, collaboration, and communication within the Innovation organization.

What We Are Looking For:

  • A Master of Science or Bachelor of Science in chemistry with 1-3 years of related experience.
  • A strong working knowledge of multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy is desired.
  • Experience in multi-step synthesis and handling of air/water reactive materials are assets.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate working in a multi-functional and fast-paced environment.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, and computer skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to Responsible Care® and alignment with NOVA's values.
  • Commitment to working in a safe and responsible manner.
  • A self-starter and proactive; capable of working independently to identify, lead and drive project work to completion while retaining flexibility and maintaining composure under pressure.

  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
