About the role.

McCain Foods (Canada) is currently seeking a Chief Engineer. Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the successful applicant will become part of a maintenance team that will be responsible for coaching, leading, and developing a team of power engineers and providing direction to ensure safe and reliable operations of the boiler and refrigeration system. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, this position will manage the day-to-day operations of the Powerhouse department and be part of the Maintenance Leadership Team.

Accountabilities:

  • Operation and maintenance of a 1st Class powerhouse that includes ammonia and refrigeration systems.
  • Along with the Plant Engineer and Maintenance team, provide support and direction to tradespeople in maintaining the reliability of boiler and refrigeration, and water treatment services.
  • Administrative responsibilities include Budget control as well as task/time scheduling using CMMS as well as electronic reports as required.
  • Supervision of contracted services within the factory as required.
  • Assist factory teams in developing areas of opportunity.
  • With support from other leaders, ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Responsible steam systems, refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, water supply systems, fire protection.
  • Manages overall operation of their department.
  • Driving and supporting Continuous Improvement ideas along with problem solving & troubleshooting opportunities that arise on shift.
  • Coaching & mentoring plant associates on change management and driving / sustaining positive business practices and tool applications on the shop floor.
  • Administrative functions of a supervisory role, such as time keeping, vacation planning, taking call-ins and finding replacements.
  • Prepares shift schedules.
  • Oversees associate training.
  • Development, training and ensuring associate completion of required trainings (e-learnings and other core and additional trainings).
  • Preparation of departmental reports.
  • Performs investigations as required.
  • Support and drive interdepartmental initiatives for Safety, QA, Costing, and H.R & Maintenance.
  • Oversee abnormality management for department Proactively foster and promote the safe work habits of employees. Ensure proper safety policies and procedures are followed. Active participation in health & safety initiatives, taking a lead role in safety optimization in the drive towards zero incidents.
  • Work closely with Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Leadership to achieve production goals and objectives efficiently.
  • Win with customers and consumers by ensuring all product quality specifications are being followed and adhered to, with an emphasis on minimizing variance.
  • Ensure all HACCP guidelines, rules and regulations are being followed throughout the food production process, including the proper completion of all required documentation.
  • Responsible for performance management system for production employees including performance appraisals and coaching and progressive discipline as required.
  • Miscellaneous related duties that may be assigned from time to time, including conducting test runs on new or existing products, accident investigation, etc.
  • Proactively foster and promote the safe work habits of employees. Ensure proper safety policies and procedures are followed. Active participation in health and safety initiatives, taking a lead role in a safety optimization and the drive towards zero incidents.
  • Work closely with the shift Manager and the other Production Supervisors to achieve production goals and KPIs efficiently. Responsible to ensure the production department meets targets set forth in quality, safety productivity, cost, delivery, morale and environment (QCDSME).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • 2nd Class Power Engineer Certification with 2 years to complete your 1st Class
  • Experience managing performance and work quality of direct reports
  • Experience resolving conflict and issues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing to people at all levels of the business
  • Ability to motivate yourself and others to achieve personal and departmental objectives
  • Ability to prioritize work, demonstrate flexibility and work effectively under pressure
