The School of Manufacturing and Automation has an opening for a full-time salaried Instructor in the Biomedical Engineering Technology program. A candidate for this position should be an energetic leader of students, have well developed communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, be committed to student motivation and achievement, work independently within established policies, be dedicated to a service model, and work cooperatively as a team member.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and present courses in both classroom and lab settings.

  • Organize and supervise practical assignments.

  • Conduct student evaluations and maintain progress records.

  • Seek regular feedback from students and staff on instructional effectiveness and relevance.

  • Collaborate in course review, program review and curriculum development.

  • Foster ongoing communications and collaborations with industry.

  • Utilize appropriate educational technology for presentations, communications and program promotions.

  • Maintain professional and ethical relationships with students and colleagues.

  • Develop, select and revise course material and curriculum on an ongoing basis to ensure relevancy to industry standards and to maximize student success.

  • Support Student/Industry engagements by attending tours and guest lectures.

  • Improve the quality of instruction through professional development activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of biomedical equipment systems. Examples of relevant biomedical equipment systems include critical care monitoring, surgical equipment, dialysis, women’s health, neonatal care, x-ray systems, ultrasound imaging, CT, and MR systems.

  • Practical knowledge of Clinical Engineering risk management including managing MMS databases, determining device inspection intervals, and incident reporting. In addition, knowledge of Health Canada device licensing, mandatory reporting, and the Sentinel Network is an asset.

  • Proficient in component level troubleshooting and repair of basic electronics and electromechanical systems including digital and analog circuits.

  • Experience with programming in the Processing and Arduino IDE.

The following skills and abilities would be an asset:

  • Soldering experience with the ability to rework and repair circuit boards using both surface mount and through hole soldering techniques.

  • Experience with IT systems related to biomedical instrumentation including clinical information systems, PACS, medical device networking, and PC configuration and repair.

  • Experience with or a strong interest in prototyping electromechanical systems such as power conversion and regulation, input transducer signal conditioning, output power driver and motor systems, and embedded microcontroller interfacing.

  • Experience with or an interest in 3D modeling and 3D printing.


Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a related advanced Engineering degree (masters) or applicable Technology diploma, with several years of industry experience.

  • Several years’ experience as a Biomedical Technologist in a Canadian clinical setting.

  • Previous instructional experience or seminar course presentations would be a definite asset.


Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

NOTE: Candidates selected for an interview will be required to do a teaching demonstration (5-8 minutes) on a provided topic from the program.

Remuneration: Will commensurate with education and experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package. Instructor salary grid $65,218.00 - $113,452.00 annually based on education and experience with room for negotiations. (Classification – Instructor).

This position is covered by the NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) Collective Agreement
