NAIT's Construction - Mechanical Technician Center is currently recruiting two full-time salaried Educational Laboratory Technologist. These positions will provide technical support for the instructional staff and students in the plumbing and gas fitting programs by maintaining equipment and adequate supplies for instructional purposes, assist in the preparation of lab/shop exercises through preparation of test samples, learning aides, equipment calibration, set-up, repair and demonstrate safe operation of equipment to students. The positions require strong knowledge and understanding of the technology, procedures, and instrumentation used in the plumbing and gas fitting programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Lab/Shop Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and calibrate lab/shop equipment

  • Ensure lab security

  • Manufacture specialized items when required

  • Ensure work area is in a safe condition

  • Liaise with other sections or programs when required

  • Maintain maintenance and inspection documents

Inventory and Budget Control:

  • Maintain inventory of equipment and consumables

  • Catalogue equipment manuals and technical literature

Instructional Support:

  • Prepare, setup and dismantle lab/shop exercises

  • Assist or perform lab/shop demonstrations of equipment under the supervision of instructional support

  • Ensure knowledge of related equipment including use and application

  • Assist instructional staff when required to ensure the safe and correct use of equipment and in the demonstration & development lab/shop exercises

Student Support:

  • Explain principles and operation of plumbing/ gas fitting related equipment

  • Demonstrate lab/shop equipment

  • Assist students in the development and execution of technical projects in cooperation with other staff members

  • Ensure students are working in a safe environment


Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills

  • Knowledge of computers

  • Ability to operate a variety of manual, electronic, Hydraulic and pneumatic tools and equipment

  • Ability to properly and safely use related tools

  • Ability to determine materials required and calculate estimate costs

  • Physically capable to perform the work functions of this position (ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted)

  • Ability to be flexible with work hours and assignment, which may require evening and weekend work


Qualifications:

  • Completion of grade twelve

  • Related (Plumber / Gasfitter) trade certificate or technical diploma required

  • Experience working in a lab/shop setting

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license

  • Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions

  • Proven Metal Fabrication and/or welding experience is an asset

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

Remuneration: $ 51,138.62 - $ 69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Educational Laboratory Technologist II).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
