Environmental / GIS Specialist


The Work:

GIS

  • Creation of mapping deliverables using ESRI ArcGIS and / or QGIS
  • Creation of field GeoPDFs
  • Preparing shapefiles from collected field data
  • Working to collect and catalogue information
  • Searching and importing data sets from public and private sources
  • Digitization of maps and survey plans into shape files
  • Programming to automate daily work flows

Environmental / Regulatory

  • Assist with the review of regulatory permitting applications and technical reports and seeing those projects through the regulatory process
  • Preparation of high-quality scientific and technical reports, including, but not limited to regulatory submission documents such as WAIFs, One Stop, EDS, DRAS, Site Assessment Reports, COPs, FWMIS/FRL submissions, Environmental mitigation, Environmental evaluations and risk assessments, ECO Plans, Care of Water Plans, etc.
  • Providing regulatory expertise on oil & gas, construction, solar energy, and other projects within your area of knowledge (i.e., Public Lands Act, Water Act, Wetland Policy, Wildlife Act, and other provincial and federal policies)
  • Reviewing variances for completeness and compliance with the Public Lands Master Schedule of Standards and Conditions (MSSC) and or municipal/provincial/federal regulations
  • Assessing and managing potential risks and liabilities associated with assigned projects
  • Assisting with the ongoing development of internal processes, including GIS, environmental/regulatory scoping tools, quick reference guides, checklists, and project templates
  • Identifying additional 'opportunities' to help our clients improve their regulatory compliance outcomes

Spatial Data Interpretation / Analyzing

  • A basic understanding of the land survey systems in Western Canada
  • Utilizing various GIS/mapping platforms to analyze and interpret datasets
  • Reading and understanding survey/engineering plans and the information within them

Regulatory Requirements

  • Understanding which Directives/Acts/etc. apply to a project
  • Finding and interpreting of the content within regulatory documents and how they apply to a project
  • Recognizing when a project does not meet a regulatory requirement and bringing it to the attention of the Project Lead/SME with mitigation options
  • Creating and submitting permitting applications to the regulator(s)
  • Potentially communicating with the regulator

Technical Writing

  • Utilize a strong command of language, grammar, and style to produce clear, concise, and readable content
  • An understanding of when to use technical or regulatory wording and when to use plain language
  • Ability to conduct thorough research, gather data, and interpret technical information to understand and explain complex topics
  • Ensure accuracy and clarity in data, technical terminology, and formatting, which is critical in technical documentation
  • Proficiency with the software being utilized, including applicable templates and GIS software
  • Reviewing reports for consistency, grammar, formatting, and technical accuracy
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet project deadlines, especially when juggling multiple projects/deliverables

Requirements

  • Industry knowledge: Experience level working knowledge with the Alberta regulatory system (i.e AUC, AER, AEP). Familiarity with federal, municipal, and Western Canada regulations is also considered an asset.
  • Technical: An aptitude for technical skill sets leads to a deeper project understanding and an ability to contribute to various projects and provide regulatory and scientifically based solutions.
    • Technically strong in one or more of the following areas:
      • Construction Monitoring
      • Environmental Protection Plans
      • Erosion and Sedimentation Control
      • Reclamation and Remediation
      • Wetland Assessment / GIS mapping
      • Drilling Waste
      • Public Land Use
      • AER OneStop
      • DFO
  • Professional Designation: A professional environmental designation is considered an asset for this role (P. Bio., P. Ag., RFP, etc.)

Soft Skills
