NAIT's Centre for Data Management and Visualization (CDMV) is recruiting a geographic information systems (GIS) technologist to assist with its Indigenous-led Community Atlases (ICA) project. The main function of the ICA - designed and developed using Esri stack of ArcGIS desktop and online software applications - is to present data (e.g. environmental, cultural, regulatory) from multiple authoritative sources in one place, breaking down institutional silos, and facilitating the intersection and analysis of disparate datasets from many organizations. The ICA aggregates scientific and environmental research as well as traditional Indigenous knowledge and historical records, presenting an interactive hub for community-led science, advocacy, public engagement and awareness for Indigenous communities in Alberta.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compile data from a variety of sources including Open Government directories, community archives, and IoT sources.
  • Assist in the development of procedures and workflows to automate data collection, publication, and updates to the ICA.
  • Assist in the integration of unstructured media and legacy data into the ICA.
  • Collaborate with the research team and community partners in the development of the ICA user interface.
  • Develop data visualization and analysis apps in the ICA to support communities in the identification of priority initiatives.
  • Prepare reports and presentations summarizing findings and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online software and related tools for data analysis, mapping, and visualization.
  • Experience with Python and Model Builder.
  • Proficient in data collection, manipulation, and analysis techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex spatial data.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present findings and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Completed a Mapping Technologist, Geographic Information System Technologist, or related program at an accredited institution.
  • Strong knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and related tools for data analysis, mapping, and visualization.
  • Experience with Python or Model Builder.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, MS Teams is required.
  • Must have access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection while working from home.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

Remuneration: $49,161.84 - $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Research Technologist II).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
