The Civil Engineering Technology program is a two-year diploma program or 2-and-a-half-year co-op diploma program in which students will learn how to design and manage construction, infrastructure and research projects. Through hands-on learning students will apply computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) systems to civil engineering problems in the areas of structural design, urban services design, highway design, pavement design, geotechnical design, project management and applied research.

Reporting to the Academic Coordinator, Construction Trades and Technologies in the School of Construction and Building Sciences, the position is responsible for the support and delivery of technical lessons in a material testing lab and survey field environment under the guidance of instructors. This position helps to support the evaluation of students using existing rubrics and assessment tools provided by instructors.

This position is also responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operations of our lab/shop spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Support:

  • Independently, and/or team teach, deliver in lab/shop technical activities/lessons
  • Evaluate students based on existing rubrics and assessment tools, provided by instructors, and provide feedback
  • Independent supervision of students
  • Demonstrate lab/shop equipment
  • Prepare, setup and dismantle lab/shop exercises
  • Assist or perform lab/shop demonstrations of equipment under the supervision of instructional support
  • Ensure knowledge of related equipment including use and application
  • Assist instructional staff when required to ensure the safe and correct use of equipment
  • Assist instructors in the development of new lab/shop exercises

Lab/Shop:

  • Maintain and calibrate lab/shop equipment
  • Ensure lab security
  • Ensure work area is in a safe and clean condition
  • Liaison with other sections or programs when required

Inventory and Budget Control:

  • Maintain consumables and inventory of equipment
  • Catalogue equipment manuals and technical literature

Student Support:

  • Provide tutorial/remedial services to students
  • Assist students in the development and execution of technical projects in cooperation with other staff members
  • Ensure students are working in a safe condition
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong Oral & Written communication
  • Strong Interpersonal skills
  • Strong time management & Organizational Skills
  • Initiative and ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of computers and use of Microsoft suite of programs
  • Ability to lift 50lbs unassisted
  • Ability to work flexible hours and assignments
  • Geotechnical and/or survey skills would be considered an asset
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time throughout the day in various outdoor environmental conditions.
  • A solid working knowledge of safety standards, and equipment operations and maintenance in the Civil Engineering Technology field

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirements are a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology with 2-5 years of related industry experience
  • Registered member with ASET or APEGA would be an asset
  • Class 5 drivers license required

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

Remuneration: $59,603.44 - $79,497.34 annually plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Instructional Assistant II).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
