Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Transportation Engineering position in Edmonton, AB from May - Aug 2025.
Job Summary
The Intern, Transportation Engineering is responsible for developing an understanding of the techniques used in the rail and logistics sector, in order to leverage large datasets. The role is accountable for providing insights for operations planning and for developing tools and reports for Network Planning as well as other teams. The role reports directly to the Senior Manager Network Planning and Transportation Engineering and works collaboratively with members of the Network Planning team and other departments. Furthermore, the incumbent provides daily or weekly reports on the progress and the challenges incurred.
Major Responsibilities
Special Projects
· Work with the Transportation Engineering on special projects concerning the ongoing development of technical systems related to the operation and modelling of the railway
· Process updates to the Track Data Management System (TDMS):
o Work with the Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) team and Transportation Engineering to review existing horizontal and vertical alignment data in TDMS and compare it with state-of-the-art outputs from rolling field measurement systems
o Identify, outline and convert discrepancies into visual and complete reports with proposed corrections if required
o Convert new data and summarize it into TDMS format for loading to the permanent database
· Update and develop Train Consist Information Reports (TCIR):
o Work with the Traffic Management Systems, Measures and Transportation Engineering using existing reports to determine train historical characteristics
o Develop new reports tailored to Transportation Engineering's goals
o Develop scripts to visualize the output data of these reports to make large-scale trend analysis more efficient
· Traffic monitoring system:
o Work with the Network Planning team to use raw data feeds from train control system, car control systems, and other databases to make reports and maps to illustrate trends
o Integrate different datasets together in order to provide more comprehensive view of the state of the network
o Support the function through running ad hoc reports
Administrative Duties
· Assist in the filing and reorganization of the department library
· Maintain existing reports and presentation materials
· Continue the development of productivity tools surrounding day-of-operation business systems
Requirements
· A strong work ethic and desire to learn, understand, respect and better systems and processes through incremental improvements
· Highly collaborative, with good communication skills
· Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
· Ability to read and interpret graphical and geospatial information, as well as to conceptualize graphical outputs from mathematical systems
· Familiarity of computer programming languages such as Python, C, Visual Basic, or Structured Query Language (SQL)*
· Knowledge of statistics, analytical methods, software development and programming*
Education
· Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Computing Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, or similar discipline (minimum of 2 years completed)
*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
