Reporting to the Manager, Campus Planning & Architecture, the Junior Space Planner's primary role is to support the optimal use of NAIT's space. The Junior Space Planner will use established guidelines and standards, best practices and expert judgment to develop solutions and provide recommendations that meet the NAIT's educational and business needs while ensuring highest and best use of space. The Junior Space Planner, in consultation with the Manager and Space Planner(s), ensures that space planning is proactive and responsive to NAIT's strategic goals and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively consult with business units on current space allocations, anticipated space needs and potential business changes to enable a strategic approach to space management.

  • Review space requests from business units, investigate and provide options & recommendations with stakeholder consultation.

  • Assist business units to reconfigure their allocated space to enable better space utilization.

  • Review existing space allocations and conduct space audits.

  • Update/maintain the space inventory data and drawings.

  • Develop functional programs, test fits, schematic designs, stack plans, finishes & furniture selections for small projects.

  • Project manage small projects.

  • Provide technical support for campus planning initiatives.

  • Assist in the development of policies, standards and guidelines.

  • Generate reports on space utilization, occupancy data, and high-level cost analysis.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Campus Planning and Architecture.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft 365 products and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with CAFM systems is considered an asset.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to collaborate with clients to provide efficient solutions balanced with the needs of the institution.

  • Communication is key to this position. The Junior Space Planner must demonstrate exceptional communication skills through a variety of means: listening, presenting, providing input, sending and receiving information, presenting information in written and drawn form.

  • Design development: ability to create space plans and visualizations using CAD software to present design concepts.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt to change and competing priorities.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as within a broader team.

  • A foundational understanding of systems furniture, barrier free design, and applicable building codes.

  • An understanding and interest in the design of spaces particular to post-secondary education including laboratories, workshops, classrooms, libraries, and common spaces.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade Twelve.

  • A diploma in Interior Design Technology, or a degree in Interior Design from an accredited program at a post-secondary institution. Equivalencies from Architecture are also welcome to apply.

  • Preference may be given recent NAIT graduates from Interior Design Technology.

  • 1-4 years of directly related experience in planning or interior design.

  • Driver's licence is considered an asset.

  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Remuneration: $49,161.84 - $69,092.14 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Technologist ll).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
