The successful candidate will join the SmartHome Labs team in Edmonton to design, create, support and test innovative consumer security and automation hardware for the new Smart home offering being developed at TELUS. In this position, you will develop new solutions as well as integrate third-party hardware in our hardware and integration test lab as we scale our new Smarthome global platform.

What you will do

  • Work with device manufacturers to design first-party video camera and home automation hardware
  • Assume technical ownership of feature development, defect management, hardware and firmware quality
  • Build out an automated test bed for hardware integration testing in our lab facility
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date technical documentation and architecture diagrams
  • Collaborate with technical product managers and other stakeholders to deliver products and features on time and on budget
  • Bring familiarity with building and deploying code using containers and other cloud-native tools
  • Work in a DevOps team environment with platform and application teams, including some 24x7 on-call support
  • Mentor other engineers and developers on our team

Qualifications

What you bring

  • Ability to evaluate tradeoffs between architecture, design and performance and make a technical recommendation
  • Experience with ARM based processor and microcontroller architectures and peripherals
  • Strong knowledge of Linux system fundamentals and Linux commands
  • Comfortable with OS internals, such as RTOS, Linux, multithreading, virtual memory, interrupts, DMA, caching and performance tuning etc.
  • Understanding of memory management, IoT device security concepts
  • Understanding of IoT communication protocols and basic networking
  • Experience with one or more large-scale embedded system projects
  • Familiar with scripting languages such as Bash, Python, Javascript, C, C++ or C#
  • Software development experience in an agile environment
  • Experience with cloud-native tools and cloud environments (GCP, AWS, OpenStack etc.)
  • Desire to learn and take on new challenges
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse groups of technical teams with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A creative approach to problem solving and an ability to work independently in an environment with high levels of ambiguity
  • Ability to manage key deliverables as part of an extended project team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, talented at developing and fostering positive relationships with other team members
  • Insatiable curiosity for problem solving, technology and innovation
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline


Great-to-haves


  • Experience with graphics & camera technology concepts, including computer vision and image processing
  • Experience with Internet of Things devices and architecture
  • Amazon Web Services certification
  • Familiarity with Android OS
  • Development experience with webRTC, AWS Kinesis Video Streams and other video streaming concepts in embedded systems
  • MySQL, MongoDB or equivalent databases
  • Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible
  • GitHub, AzureDevops, BitBucket, or equivalent source control repositories
  • Chef, Jenkins, Azure agents or equivalent CI-CD pipeline tools
  • Professional Engineer or other professional designation
