Capital Power is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join our HSSE team.

Reporting to the Director, the Senior Specialist, Environmental Compliance and Reporting is accountable for the provision of environmental support functions for Capital Power facilities with a focus on GHG reporting and maintenance of environmental programs. This includes ensuring all facilities within their area of responsibility are aware of, and in compliance with, all applicable environmental legislation and regulations, internal Capital Power policies and reporting requirements. 

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Providing environmental advice, coaching expertise, guidance, leadership, and support to all levels of the organization.
  • Interpreting, implementing and ensuring consistent application of internal environmental standards and compliance with environmental regulations, permits and approvals.
  • Preparing required GHG reporting business wide, along with other environmental corporate reporting as required.
  • Providing input, guidance and support to all environmental compliance systems and programs.
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate environmental programs (e.g. corporate standards, training, etc.).
  • Developing and maintaining environmental aspects of the HSSE Management System.
  • Overseeing and approving selection of external consultants including the delivery of technical reports, performance assessments required to support GHG and other environmental compliance reporting.
  • Monitoring adherence to environmental policies, standards and processes for assigned projects.
  • Monitoring changes to environmental regulations and legislation, and to the extent they impact Capital Power operations, ensures regulatory changes are reflected in corporate programs.
  • Preparing environmental permit amendments or renewals as required.
  • Supporting the management of follow-up on environmental incidents to ensure proper notification to regulatory authorities, root-cause analysis, and resolution.
  • Following up on environmental audit issues to assist with action plan and to ensure adequate resolution.

What you will bring to the role:  

Education:

  • Completed University degree in engineering or Natural/General Sciences or Associates or Technical degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent.
  • Education equivalency may be considered.

Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years related experience.
  • Advanced understanding and experience with GHG quantification and reporting.
  • Thorough understanding of environmental policy, environmental aspects, and environmental management systems including reference to ISO 14001.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation, laws, and regulations, and the ability to gather updates and changes.
  • Experience writing technical reports, including details with respect to GHG and sustainability reporting.
  • Good understanding of power operations or industrial facilities and associated environmental risk.
  • Strong data management and Excel experience.
  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Edmonton Head Office based role working a hybrid schedule.
  • Travel expectations may also include the potential for occasional travel to various Capital Power Sites.
  • Potential for infrequent after hour calls as part of incident or emergency notification process.
