At SMS Equipment, our Heavy Equipment Technical Specialist - Engineer (EIT) is responsible for providing safe, efficient and economical repair procedures and techniques to support the timely repair of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Technical Specialist - Engineer (EIT) will assist tradespeople remotely or locally, in repair procedures and techniques when problems are encountered. This position is in Fort Hills, AB.

The shift rotation for this position is 7x7. Flights and accommodation are available.

The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $120,000.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist tradespeople locally in repair procedures and techniques ensuring that maintenance and repair of equipment is conducted in a safe, efficient, and economical manner.
  • Produce technical reports for both internal and external communications.
  • Assist in product issue resolution using standard root cause analysis.
  • Timely creation and submission of technical data and reports such as TSI and TSR reports to the OEM.
  • Creation of failure reports as required.
  • Track and monitor test programs in the field, communicate with the Reliability team and Corporate Technical Support.
  • Record and document major component change-outs on all equipment fleets ensuring compliance with contracts and programs.
  • Develop procedures and processes including S.O.P.s and Best Work Practices.
  • Monitor and track equipment health through component oil sample results and other reported irregularities.
  • Continuously identify areas for improvement and make recommendations to alleviate issues and equipment downtime and preventative maintenance.
  • Lead customer meetings and task force committees on product issues.
  • Stay abreast of latest technical information, technologies and trends.
  • Provide technical training for industry specific needs.
  • Support the warranty process as required.
  • Support large machine outages or overhauls, when requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a relevant Journeyperson certification or a post secondary education in Engineering paired with a minimum of 3 years of heavy equipment experience within the mining industry. Additional qualifications include:

  • Sound understanding of principles associated within the mining environment.
  • The ability to operate in a dynamic environment with focus on client and customer relations is essential.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have a wide-ranging working knowledge of computer systems.
  • Proficient communication skills in dealing with customers and OEM's.
  • Able to consistently make intelligent decisions under pressure; possess good judgement, initiative, positive attitude and be dependable.
  • Sound understanding of electro-mechanical systems, hydraulics and/or structural designs.
  • Proficiency in electronics as well as software applications.
  • Ability to lead projects and drive improvement initiatives.
  • Valid Class 5/G Drivers License.
