NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

We are seeking an Instrumentation Engineering Technologist to join our Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering Team located at our Joffre Site in Central Alberta, near Red Deer. Reporting to the Instrumentation and Electrical Engineering Team Leader, you will be responsible for providing support to the Joffre operating facility.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Provide technical support to Production Unit Team and Maintenance, for critical issues, including:
    • Equipment outages, capacity limitations, etc.
    • Technology application
    • Equipment specification & changes
    • Troubleshooting
    • Mentorship
    • Highlight and optimize maintenance, operational and engineering practices to improve reliability.
    • Follow-up (direct technical support or lead focus teams) on equipment failures, determine root causes and identify actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Provide project design and management for Instrumentation Facility Change Management projects.
  • Apply "reliability-in-design" focus to the capital project process including project justification, technical direction/specification, spare parts assessments and auditing of project reliability deliverables (e.g., PM's, spare parts etc.).
  • Work with Maintenance, Operations, and Plant Engineering to establish and resolve approaches to reliability priorities.
  • Review and provide input to unit outages and major turnaround scope.
  • Ensure the Computerized Maintenance Management System is in alignment with equipment strategies and templates.
  • Apply/sustain/improve NOVA Standards.
  • Review new equipment designs to ensure maintenance and reliability issues are considered and addressed. Develop requirements for new equipment and repaired equipment.
  • Benchmark internally and externally to identify and share best practices.
  • Optimize equipment spare parts and predictive/preventative maintenance practices to ensure required reliability at lowest cost.

What We Are Looking For:

  • An Electrical/Instrument Engineering Degree with 10+ years of design and/or reliability experience in an industrial plant or equivalent technology environment; OR an Electrical/Instrument Technology Diploma with 10+ years maintenance, design and/or reliability experience in an industrial plant or equivalent technology environment
  • P.Eng., P.L. Eng., or P. Tech designation in Alberta, or eligibility to obtain, would be considered an asset
  • Ability to work well in a team setting, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven ability to provide leadership and deliver results
  • Demonstrated ability in applying a systemic approach to problem solving, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of your work areas technology and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to manage your workload with minimal supervision, managing multiple projects and tasks in a dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated skills in plant instrumentation, DCS and PLCs.
  • Experience with SAP and SPF would be considered an asset

  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 10% travel
