The 3rd Class Power House Engineer will act as the ABSA Shift Engineer who is responsible for the safe, efficient and reliable operation and maintenance of the boiler, refrigeration, utilities and all their auxiliary and ancillary equipment.

This person reports directly to the Chief Power Engineer and will interacts with all employees in the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to sustaining ABSA Power Engineers Act, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Act and all associated boiler and refrigeration regulations
  • Startup and shutdown boiler and auxiliary systems and equipment as required
  • Startup and shutdown of the ammonia refrigeration systems as required
  • Monitor and maintain boiler, utilities and refrigeration systems on a continuous basis maintaining equipment within operational guidelines
  • The worker will actively monitor the DCS computer screens and adjust as required for optimal performance and efficiency
  • Perform boiler and auxiliary equipment water tests and adjust chemical feed as required
  • Maintain water treatment equipment, filters, and reverse osmosis systems, etc.
  • Maintain and monitor Air Compressors, Air Drier and Instrument air system processes.
  • Maintain and monitor fire water pumps and backup diesel generator
  • Participate in holding equipment availability to the predetermined target
  • Support maintenance schedules and permit work activities
  • Lock and Tag equipment in preparation for maintenance activities
  • Follow Operator Standard Work daily routines to verify equipment running within set parameters and ensuring reliable operation
  • Maintain Boiler Room logbook as required by ABSA
  • Complete the equipment log every 2-hours tracking specific items such as temperatures, pressure, levels, vibration, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and anticipate problems with equipment in your care repairing if possible or informing Supervisor if it can't be rectified
  • Preventive maintenance routines as scheduled
  • Complete small repairs on equipment as required, e.g. tightening packings, cleaning small check valves, repairing steam and condensate leaks, etc.
  • Maintain, adjust, and rebuild steam regulators as required.
  • The worker must ascent onto the roof once a shift for visual checks and minor repairs

Qualifications

  • Valid minimum 3rd Class Power Engineering Certification
  • Grade 12 education
  • Able to work 12 hour shifts including nights and weekends
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and alone for extended periods
  • Willingness to learn
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Follow personal hygiene rules
  • Have up to date tickets for associated duties of the position
