Term of Employment:Full-time, Summer Term (April 28, 2025 - August 29, 2025)
Rate of Pay:Water and Wastewater Salary Grid: $30.72 per hour (Subject to CUPE 1015 Agreement)

Duties:






Reporting to the Manager, Wastewater Treatment, the Treatment Plants Operator will provide expertise in controlling the wastewater treatment process and equipment, inclusive of the operation of the facility, maintenance of the equipment, and laboratory analysis. This role also includes participation in the City of Lloydminster's Safety Management System. Treatment Plant Operators must be well versed in critical thinking, troubleshooting, and making real time process adjustments as required. Activities include data collection, data analysis, starting/stopping equipment, conducting all preventative maintenance, maintaining the cleanliness of the facility, and the collection and analysis of all laboratory samples. All these tasks and skills, ensure that the City of Lloydminster protects the integrity of their infrastructure, meets all Permit requirements, and ultimately protects the receiving environment, by producing the highest possible quality of effluent.

Process Maintenance and Operation
  • Adjust airflow and blower outputs, as necessary to maintain bacterial populations.
  • Adjust chemical dosing to certain parameters to maintain the highest quality of treatment.
  • Monitor flows, pond levels, wet well levels, pressures, dissolved oxygen levels, and effluent quality. Must make appropriate process changes as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including lubrication, operating of moving parts, cleaning, and painting. Operators will also be required to make or direct emergency repairs or process corrections on a 24 hour per day basis.
  • Maintain the plant's boilers and glycol circulation system and the Make-Up Air Unit.
  • Observe pumps and motors to detect unusual noises, vibration, or excess heat. Adjust or replace pump seals, packing, or mechanical seals, as required.
  • Maintain Wastewater Treatment Plant Site, inclusive of weed maintenance, string trimming, garbage pickup and general janitorial tasks.
Research, Data Entry, and Compliance
  • Maintain plant records, including operating logs, daily inspection data, equipment maintenance files, supply inventories and weekly lab entries. Collects and records data for weekly, monthly and annual reporting, as well as all other Permit requirements.
  • Develop Standard operating Procedures, conducting regular safety inspections, and hazard assessments. Take corrective actions whenever required to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Research process variables and potential process improvements, to ensure optimum treatment.
  • Research and develop educational materials to present to the public. Conduct tours of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Laboratory Analysis
  • Collect representative wastewater samples and conducts laboratory analysis for biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia, nitrates, alkalinity, turbidity, color and all other laboratory requirements.
  • Collect, transport, and submit samples to be analyzed by third-party laboratories.
  • Perform calibrations on lab equipment on a monthly basis.
  • Clean and maintain all lab equipment and wastewater lab facilities.
Schedule:
Normal working hours are between 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with the occasional requirement to work outside these standard hours and a rotating on-call schedule.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary study in the fields of wastewater and/or water treatment, environmental management, or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Ability to upgrade certifications throughout the course of employment.
  • Team player with a positive attitude that can communicate effectively with supervisors and operators on the appropriate technical level.
  • Must possess a basic mechanical knowledge and be in good physical condition.
  • Must be able to complete tasks with minimal direction and be self-motivated.
  • Must be able to comprehend maps, schematics, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal; with the ability to speak confidently in a public setting are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
  • Must be innovative, detail-oriented, and methodical.
  • Capable of managing conflicting, high-priority assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships at various levels both internally and externally; able to resolve concerns or complaints.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations, such as calculating volumes, flows, and percentage removals.
  • Comprehension of laboratory data, bylaws, and Permit language.
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Vehicle Operator's License (registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan) with a clear driving record.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Work Environment:This position is a combination of office, laboratory, workshop, and outdoor work, potentially in adverse weather conditions and in potentially hazardous worksites.
Special Instructions:Applicants must be attending a post-secondary program including college or university during the last school term and returning to studies in the subsequent academic year. Verification of student status will be required.
