West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Our North Central Woodlands division, located near Slave Lake and High Prairie, has an opportunity for an Assistant Forester.

The North Central Woodlands team is responsible for leading safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sound forestry operations for West Fraser in the Slave Lake and High Prairie regions of Alberta. The team supplies the fibre required for a veneer plant and a lumber mill.

Starting as an Assistant Forester offers diverse experience within the Woodlands Team, focusing on silviculture, planning, and operations. You'll work under a Woods Superintendent, engaging in field and office tasks and have opportunities for advancement as you acquire new skills

You'll Do:

  • Silviculture: post-harvest assessments, planting supervision
  • Planning: timber reconnaissance, block and road layout, site plans, watercourse assessments, preparation, and submission of cutting and permit applications
  • Operations: logging and road building supervision, log quality checks, environmental compliance assessments, Road Inspections, deactivation prescription and monitoring, waste assessment, conduct, and managing drone imagery.
  • Supervision of consultants and contractors
  • Safety and environmental performance

You Have:

  • The successful candidate is required to be a graduate of a recognized forestry program
  • Possess a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or Registered Technologist (RFT) designation for Alberta (or be eligible and willing to earn this designation)
  • Knowledge of Alberta forest legislation
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and electronic communication skills

Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in an industrial forest setting. The successful candidate should have a passion for the outdoors and be eager to learn new skills.

Compensation Package:

  • The salary range for this position may vary depending on experience, education, and location.
