Automation and Controls Engineer/Specialist

Our Automation and Controls Engineer/Specialists develop and implement controls solutions to lead the charge when it comes to optimizing production processes, improving plant safety, product quality, and production throughput. Automation and Controls Engineer/Specialists are responsible for controls standards, PLC/HMI programming, equipment commissioning, historian maintenance, troubleshooting of control system issues, as well as project support. We are looking for a highly motivated Automation and Controls Engineer/Specialist to join our Athabasca OSB Division, located in Slave Lake, Alberta. This state-of-the-art facility has the longest continuous press in North America, giving us the ability to produce a diverse range of innovative products for customers around the world.

Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  1. Post Secondary Engineering Degree or Engineering Technician Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent experience.
  2. Engineering degree or relevant qualified trades certification.
  3. 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment (Forest Products Manufacturing preferred).
  4. Experience with PLC programming (Rockwell Studio 5000 preferred).
  5. Experience working with Automation.
  6. Experience with industrial machine automation.
  7. Experience with Human Machine Interfaces (FactoryTalk View SE).
  8. Proficient with FactoryTalk software (Historian, View, Linx, AssetCentre, etc.).


    In this role, you will:

    1. Champion improvement initiatives for current products and processes.
    2. Drive change through innovative process improvement.
    3. Put creativity into action and apply your knowledge in statistical process control by running experimental trials and evaluations.
    4. Leverage your analytical ability to identify and solve complex problems.
    5. Lean on your strong interpersonal and leadership skills to build relationships and embed product quality and innovation in the mindset of others.
    6. Establish and maintain a program of quality checks, testing and data collection to ensure the conformity of incoming raw materials and compliance with end product standards.
    7. Be available for after hours support on a rotational basis.
