The Opportunity

The Safety System Risk Management (SSRM) team focuses on identifying, analyzing, treating, and monitoring the safety risks associated with the eight technologies we regulate in British Columbia. The Risk Management Specialist translates and communicates risk analysis outcomes to support development of cross-functional risk treatment actions collaboratively with internal team and external partners. Conducts research to scope risk treatment projects and support the implementation of risk treatment actions through project management support and providing addressing risk information requests. The specialist will lead the documentation and evaluation of the risk treatment actions and coordinate regular updates of the Risk Register to help prioritize risks for treatment.

Location: open to any of our BC regional offices (hybrid work environment)

As a Risk Management Specialist, you will:

Support risk understanding and prioritization:

  • Derive insights from risk analyses that are meaningful to respective functional teams and translate into actionable insights to enhance organizational understanding of safety risks and integrate risk-based thinking in our core work.
  • Maintain the integrity and currency of the risk register by identifying new risks or changes to existing risks from incident data and verify these changes by working collaboratively with technical and operational leaders across technologies
  • Support the regular update of the risk metrics through foundational statistical analyses and collation of incidents by risks.
  • Promote organizational understanding of safety system risks and clear reporting by leading the documentation of projects and program framework on internal platforms.

Lead the guidance and facilitation of risk treatment planning and monitoring:

  • Work as an expert advisor to organizational decision-makers and project leaders to help them understand risk analysis findings with the aim to support development of risk treatment options and risk prioritization (i.e., present and communicate findings in clear and innovative ways to effectively reach and influence target audiences and highlight synergies with respective team functions)
  • Work closely with core functional teams to develop risk treatment options and proactively seek to explore innovative ways to tackle risks from multiple dimensions of risk – hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, and developing partnerships with external organizations.
  • Support execution of risk treatment projects through scoping and strategy, resource and timeline requirements.
  • Design and support the evaluation of risk treatment action impact and effectiveness
  • Lead the documentation and tracking of risk treatment actions, their status and progress
  • Contribute as a subject matter expert to the establishment of organizational standards, guidelines and tools related to safety systems risk management.
  • Lead and provide input on reports, presentations and business cases in support of departmental needs and initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:

  • Post-secondary degree in product/program development, management, decision science, or science communication and/or equivalent education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience with cross-functional stakeholder engagement, project management, and translating and visualizing data analysis results to derive actionable insights
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills and knowledge of best practices (i.e., content and framework analyses, descriptive analyses, correlational and regression analyses).
  • Excellent data visualization, knowledge translation, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Good project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite; and other visual workspace software an asset.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in stakeholder-rich environments.
  • Adaptability, proactivity, and ability to work independently under pressure with quickly changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Superior interpersonal skills; ability to exercise a high degree of tact and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive data.
