Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM

This is skilled and semi-skilled arboricultural work below the journeyman level in leading and participating in the work of a crew engaged in pruning, maintaining, planting, removing, and falling boulevard and park trees. An incumbent of this class prunes park and boulevard trees from ground level, elevated platforms and within the crowns of trees as reached using ladders and/or ropes and safety harness, using power saws and related arboriculture tree care tools and equipment such as wood chipping machines; and performs tasks related to tree planting, tree removal, pest management and young tree culture. An incumbent of this class also acts as crew leader in providing site direction, including making work allocations, checking work progress, reviewing work, keeping time records, training, and taking general responsibility for the work of the crew and for public safety, while avoiding damage to private property, water courses and wild animal habitat. Considerable independence of judgement is exercised in work which may entail hazardous conditions. Assignments are received from a supervisor who checks the work during progress or upon completion for attainment of desired objectives and the maintenance of desired standards. The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work as required by the department. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to tree care and maintenance, and completion of a recognized Tree Trimmer/Climber course, plus in-service training related to the work, and sound related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, safety precautions, materials, tools, and equipment used in arboricultural work, including those related to pruning, removal, planting, and young tree culture. Sound knowledge of tree pests and diseases and of methods for their control. Ability to perform hazardous climbing, pruning, falling and removal tasks at considerable heights above the ground; carry out work according to oral and written instructions with minimal supervision; supervise and review the work of subordinates performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks and to provide training to same; to perform & document tree risk assessments; and prepare and maintain records related to the work. Tree Risk Assessor Certificate, ISA Certification and a BC Class 5 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement are required.

This is a temporary full time opportunity until May 9, 2025.
