The Universal Group, recognized as one of Canada's best-managed companies in 2023, has an exciting opportunity for a Occupational Health and Safety Advisor to join our Health and Safety team. Reporting to the Regional OHS Manager - Western Canada, the OHS Advisor ensuring the safety of traffic control personnel at work sites and strict adherence to transport guidelines, encompassing the Ministry of Transportation Traffic Management Manual, Worksafe OHS Regulations, and the company's own OHS guidelines.


What you will be responsible for:

Supporting Field Staff

  • Support and coach field staff in the safe operation of their duties.
  • Engage in conflict resolution to de-escalate difficult situations.
  • Administer training and facilitate timely corrective actions for safety shortcomings on site.
  • Perform TCP (Traffic Control Person) duties to cover employee breaks/shortages.
  • Administer first aid if necessary.


Investigation Work

  • Conduct site inspections regularly to ensure safety compliance.
  • Complete investigations into accidents, unsafe acts on-site, etc.
  • Conduct Drug and Alcohol reasonable checklists and, if necessary, send employees for Drug and Alcohol testing.


Administrative Activities

  • Liaise with clients to ensure regulatory compliance and safety of Universal staff on sites.
  • Assist with internal COR audits.
  • Review Health & Safety related documentation.
  • Assist in the development and communication of Safe Work Practices and Procedures.


Company Program Facilitation

  • Facilitate the Universal Mentorship Program (UMP).
  • Facilitate the Universal Group's Injured Worker Engagement Program.

What we need from you:

  • Certified as a Traffic Control Person (TCP) by a WorkSafe approved training provider. Experience working as a TCP is a strong asset.
  • Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying BC's Workers Comp Act, OHS Regulations, Policies, Guidelines, and Standards.
  • BCCSA Certified COR Internal Audit or willingness to obtain.
  • Level 2 First Aid or willingness to obtain.
  • Diploma/Certificate and/or previous work experience in Occupational Health and Safety is an asset.
  • Certification and/or work experience as a CSO or OFA is an asset.
  • Experience with Health and Safety software such as Salus.
  • Experience with Office 365 and G-Suite.
  • Experience with Investigation.
