Job Summary
The Electrician provides electrical alterations and installations for all construction and renovation projects handled by the Construction Management Office (CMO). Supports projects by providing trades skills and expertise with a significant amount of time spent on tools.

Organizational Status

This position receives direction and work assignments from the CMO Team Lead and reports to the Construction Manager.

Works closely with other CMO staff and all units within the portfolios of Campus Operations and Risk Management and Infrastructure Development. Works with the campus community including students, staff, faculty, and contractors.


Work Performed

Supports renovation and construction projects with individual works by applying trades skills and expertise:

  • Performs duties as instructed in compliance with applicable regulatory codes and regulations and in accordance with work orders, drawings, documents and project schedules.

  • Assembles, installs, and tests electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, distribution equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures or other components, to ensure compatibility and safety of electrical systems.

  • Inspects electrical systems and components installed or altered as part of project work by CMO to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment, and to ensure compliance with codes.

  • Installs and tests hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems.

  • Troubleshoots and corrects electrical deficiencies associated with CMO projects.

  • Provides accurate and complete information on the status of equipment and systems when completing time cards, work orders and test-inspection reports.

  • Maintains concise record management for the department as approved by supervisor(s).

  • Creates and submits as-built documentation once each work task is complete.

  • Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.

  • Ensures that the workplace is safe and follows safe work practices.

  • Responsible for the correct use and safe-keeping of assigned vehicles, materials, tools and equipment used in the execution of work performed.

Responsible for administrative functions such as:

  • Keeps and maintains necessary administrative and system records, such as log books, records, and tool inventories.

  • Holds a UBC Visa card, purchases equipment and materials as required, and performing monthly reconciliations.

Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in judgement could result in damage to buildings and/or equipment, classes being cancelled or delayed, lost revenue from chargeable booking, unnecessary over time, delayed or cancelled events. Failure to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods, such as lock-out procedures, could result in safety hazards to the campus community and co-workers. Campus community safety would be compromised. Workload backlog can delay project completion and impede teaching and research. Workload backlog or poor client services skills could negatively impact the reputation of a new office and service to the Okanagan campus.

Consequence of errors in judgment could compromise campus community safety. Work load backlog and delays could effect critical business functions.


Supervision Received
Receives direction from the CMO Team Lead and reports to the Construction Manager.

Supervision Given
Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and contractors as the need arises.


Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training to journeyman status.

- Red seal certification as electrician is required.

- Must have FSR ticket.

- Over 6 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own

Preferred Qualifications

- A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes. Strong knowledge of the National Electric code.

- Ability to interpret drawings and specifications, sketches of work required, and maintenance manuals.

- Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem solving skills.

- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

- Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.

- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.

- Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

- Proven ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment, work in confined areas, withstand heights and/or long periods of bending, and working in extreme climate conditions on a continuous basis.

- Ability to perform strenuous physical work and assume uncomfortable or awkward positions.

- Required to lift up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.

- Flexibility and comfort with change.

- Willing and able to respond at short notice to Emergency Calls related to CMO projects outside working hours.

- Must be able to perform call-outs for emergencies associated with CMO projects.

- Valid Class 5 Driver's License required.
