We are looking for multiple Mechanical Technologists/Technicians to provide mechanical technical support for professionals and tradespersons in the Central Services Maintenance Department of our modernized aluminum smelter site in Kitimat, BC.

This role is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual to tackle challenging problems in a complex industrial environment. The individual will have the opportunity to improve and/or upgrade a variety of systems related to heavy equipment and machinery, pneumatics and hydraulics, sensors, roller crushers, autogenous mills, vibrating screens, overhead lifting equipment, or systems related to raw material transportation and others such us conveyors, air slides, dust collectors, storage silos, high pressure pipelines, solid phase system (SPS), dense phase system (DPS), hyper dense phase system (HDPS), steam generators, locomotives, ship unloaders, and pumping stations.

Reporting to Maintenance Superintendent and working a rotating day shift schedule, you will be:

  • Working in accordance with Rio Tinto health, safety and environmental safety standards and taking part in the culture of care, courage, and curiosity
  • Providing technical support for production and maintenance teams
  • Ensuring effectiveness and compliance of the preventive, predictive, periodic maintenance (PPPM) activities to provide safe and reliable equipment operations
  • Defining spare parts requirements to meet OEE targets and request removal of obsolete spare parts
  • Working with site maintenance, operations, and contractors, to improve equipment reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety
  • Evaluating asset condition and carry-out actions assigned on improvement plans
  • Developing guidelines, specifications, and standards to repair/ refurbish equipment
  • Analysing KPIs and trends to identify improvement opportunities
  • Providing support outside of regular working hours as needed during critical breakdowns

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma or a Red Seal in a Mechanical trade
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Technical knowledge relating to mechanical maintenance including pneumatic, hydraulic systems, and conveyer systems
  • Advanced communication and collaboration skills
  • Intermediate MS Excel skills (i.e.: macros, statistical analysis)
  • Organizational skills
  • A minimum of a B.C. Class 7 (Novice) Driver's license or equivalent

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Registration or eligibility to register as an Applied Science Technologist with ASTTBC

The base salary range for this role is $84,000 - $126,000 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
