About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for an Operations Supervisor to oversee and optimize the personnel, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations, within the Reduction Department, where the aluminum reduction process, called "smelting", occurs. The smelting process dissolves alumina in a cryolite bath within carbon-lined cells called pots. By passing a strong electric current through the bath, this process separates aluminum metal from the chemical solution, allowing the metal to be siphoned off.

This role is a great opportunity for an engaging and adaptable leader to join a dynamic environment where they can leverage their leadership skills, drive improvements, and foster both professional growth and impactful contributions to the broader site.

Leading on the frontline is one of the most important jobs in our business and comes with a huge amount of responsibility. We need you to motivate, inspire and keep your people safe and well. With signature leadership training programmes, growing and developing is more than an opportunity - it is something we actively plan and make happen. Every day our leaders grow, while our rosters are designed to help you live the lifestyle that is right for you and your family.

Reporting to the Reduction Operations Superintendent, and working a rotating day/night roster of 12-hour shifts, you will be:

  • Adhering to and promoting Rio Tinto's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards while actively engaging in our culture of care, courage, and curiosity.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement of standards, policies, and procedures while identifying and driving safety and efficiency enhancements within relevant teams and areas
  • Communicating and coordinating with peers the appropriate operating conditions, expectations, and targets for efficient shift change/hand over
  • Identifying areas where improvement to safety performance is necessary and initiating this change within the appropriate teams and areas.
  • Ensuring roles and responsibilities are clearly understood and setting performance targets to encourage the necessary/desired behaviours
  • Taking ownership over efficient/effective problem solving, decision making, and action at the right levels
  • Participating in the continuous improvement of standards, policies, and procedures

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A minimum education of a high school diploma or GED
  • At minimum of a valid B.C. Class 7 (Novice) driver's license or equivalent
  • Proven effective leadership skills: the ability to set direction, prioritize and achieve objectives, actively listen, and engage and motivate your team members.
  • Clear, concise, and tactful communication along with strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Previous supervisory experience

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Leadership experience in a unionized environment
  • Experience in an industrial setting: mining, processing, manufacturing or related

Please note: Fly-in-fly-out arrangements are not available, but we do offer domestic relocation assistance to help you settle in and thrive. Join our team and become an integral part of our vibrant community.

Applications close on Sunday the 9th of February 2025 (Rio Tinto reserves the right to remove advertised roles prior to this date)
