About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for an Operations Superintendent to lead the safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible operations of our Reduction Department, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and business objectives through best practices. The Reduction Department is where the aluminum reduction process, called "smelting", occurs. The smelting process dissolves alumina in a cryolite bath within carbon-lined cells called pots. By passing a strong electric current through the bath, this process separates aluminum metal from the chemical solution, allowing the metal to be siphoned off.

This role is a great opportunity for a driven and innovative leader to oversee a key area in the aluminum production process, with the opportunity to elevate operational excellence in a fast-paced and impactful environment.

Leading on the frontline is one of the most important jobs in our business and comes with a huge amount of responsibility. We need you to motivate, inspire and keep your people safe and well. With signature leadership training programmes, growing and developing is more than an opportunity - it is something we actively plan and make happen. Every day our leaders grow, while our rosters are designed to help you live the lifestyle that is right for you and your family.

Reporting to the Reduction Operations Manager, and working a Monday to Friday schedule, you will be:

  • Adhering to and promoting Rio Tinto's Health, Safety, and Environmental standards while actively engaging in our culture of care, courage, and curiosity.
  • Leading a team of Operations Supervisors and approximately forty Operators.
  • Delivering on key indicators such as productivity and quality by collaborating with other departments across the site.
  • Fostering a culture of continuous improvement by supporting implementation of initiatives, competency training, and technical advancements.
  • Preparing and managing capital and operating budgets to achieve business outcomes.
  • Enhancing leadership capabilities and supporting employee development
  • Applying business evaluation techniques and risk assessment principles to optimize operations and service delivery.
  • Driving production efficiency through effective leadership, engagement, and the application of technology.
  • Acting as a liaison between leadership and the shop floor, support active listening initiatives, and provide critical incident support, including participation in an on-call rotation.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Degree qualification or equivalent leadership experience, with a technical or trade background in industry.
  • A competent and visible leadership style of guiding, mentoring, developing and empowering team members resulting in positive employee engagement
  • Leadership experience in mining, plant, heavy industry, resources, or similar challenging operational roles.
  • The capability to critically analyse data and make effective strategic and operational decisions based on information provided and drive issues to resolution
  • A proven record in leading operational teams with experience in continuous improvement and change management activities
  • Clear and engaging interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must hold at least a Class 7 BC driver's license, or be immediately eligible to obtain one if coming from out of province or country.
  • Understanding of cost structures and strategies for optimization and efficiency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience using business improvement methodologies such as: KAIZEN, Lean Six Sigma and Change Management would be beneficial

Please note: Fly-in-fly-out arrangements are not available, but we do offer domestic relocation assistance to help you settle in and thrive. Join our team and become an integral part of our vibrant community.
