Purpose of this Position

The Maintenance Engineer is an integral part of the Maintenance team. You are jointly responsible for the tasks required to ensure the effective capacity utilization, reliability and life cycle asset management. The Maintenance Engineer will oversee maintenance indicators and implement equipment design changes to improve performance and safety. They will work with trades and other engineers on tasks such as Cummins, Volvo, and ABB program updates, enabling mechanics in software tasks. The role includes managing inventory and assets to ensure reliability, effective scheduling, and parts availability. They will lead maintenance program changes, optimize preventive maintenance, and job plans to ensure safety compliance. This position also involves managing projects through their lifecycle, driving continuous improvement initiatives, performing data analysis for root cause determination, and prioritizing safety and adherence to standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan all corrective maintenance and administer the preventive maintenance program.
  • Lead, facilitate, and manage projects from conception to completion.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities in maintenance procedures and practices, including cost containment, gained efficiencies and waste reduction improvements.
  • Review and monitor performance against plans, standards and practices, taking the initiative to make recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain, collect and analyse data in order to apply analytical thinking and analysis tools for root cause and/or cause and effect determination.
  • Support compliance with regulatory, corporate and site safety and environmental standards by conducting risk assessments, safety audits and developing safe operating procedures.

Qualifications, Job Function, Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, MS Project and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems, such as Maximo.
  • Prior experience working in an industrial and/or unionized environment is an asset.
  • Understanding of modern maintenance and reliability best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated abilities working with various trades, such as electricians and/or mechanics, within a unionized and heavy industrial environment.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem solving skills, coupled with exceptional time management, organization, and planning skills.
  • Self-reliance with strong written and verbal communication capable of taking initiative and making decisions under time constraints.
  • A flexible team player who is able to work as required and willing to adapt to change.
  • Knowledge of the Container Shipping Industry and equipment is preferred.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Previous Canadian work experience or experience working directly with Canadian industries.
