Job Description Summary

The engineer will interface sensors, electronics and computer to computer-controlled machines; write real time and off line software systems to monitor and control machines and machining processes; computer algorithms simulating the machining process in computer graphics environment.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the Primary Researcher. Works in co-operation with graduate students and postdocs.

Work Performed

Write real time sensor measurement algorithms and test the instruments.

Guides graduate students in interfacing sensors to data acquisition computers.

Interfaces computers to digital amplifiers of servo motors of machine tools.

Develop Graphical User Interface with documented architecture in C++.

Conduct software architecture testing

Develop graphical user interface.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The work is tested before results are reported in the literature or to the sponsoring agency so errors will be caught in advance. However, there could still be significant delay to the work if inappropriate decisions are made.

Supervision Received

The research engineer is expected to conduct work independently and the faculty member will oversee the results.

Supervision Given

This position will supervise junior engineers and oversee their work. This position will also have minor supervisory duty in communicating with intern undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs within the research group.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science.Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Three to five year experience in software architecture testing and graphical user interface development an asset.
