Job Summary

A position with the Marra Lab at the Michael Smith Laboratories, University of British Columbia is open immediately for a bioinformatics scientist to work with our interdisciplinary team of researchers. We are seeking a creative, experienced, and dedicated individual to play a key role in the bioinformatics analysis of computational cancer genomic research data.

The bioinformatics scientist will work closely with researchers in our research team, ranging from long-term publication investigations to ad hoc one-off analysis and scripting. With high-level instructions, you will be finding and developing bioinformatics solutions for computational genomics problems. When appropriate, your solutions will be deployed in full production processes, and you will work closely with researchers to ensure the successful deployment of workflows, pipelines and analyses.

You will be located at the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Genome Sciences Centre, working closely with students, post-doctoral fellows, and researchers operating at the leading edge of the field of cancer genomics. The Marra lab has positioned itself as a nexus of technology development, cancer genome science and personalized cancer genomic medicine to deliver new discoveries capable of shifting cancer research and treatment paradigms and revealing new, more effective ways to treat cancer. We do this by engaging in research projects that have the potential to influence clinical paradigms and eventually lead to the creation of new treatment options for cancer patients.

Organizational Status

We are a small team of pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and scientists collaborating with both local and international teams of researchers. You will be working with students, post-docs, and researchers to tackle genomics problems, along with bioinformaticians to develop high-throughput and automated analysis solutions. You will be reporting to the principle investigator, Dr. Marco Marra.

Work Performed

  • Research and implement bioinformatics solution as requested

  • Collaborate with researchers to develop, test and automate bioinformatics solutions

  • Collaborate with researchers to distribute and maintain software packages

  • Handle bioinformatics data retrieval, processing and dissemination requests

  • Assist researchers in computational, statistical and visualization tasks for publication

Consequence of Error/Judgement

You will be receiving instructions from researchers, students and collaborators and will be responsible for the correctness of your work. Failure to perform may result in set back to research and operational activities, and reputational and financial loss in scientific and publication output.

Supervision Received

You will be reporting to the principle investigator.

Supervision Given

You will help advise and recommend best course of actions to other members of the lab on subjects pertaining to bioinformatics analysis and your field of expertise.
