Job Summary

The Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining, or BRIMM, promotes cross-disciplinary research spanning the entire mining life-cycle, from early exploration to mine closure and rehabilitation. It is also a designated partner of the recently launched Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) network, a pan Canadian Mining network with a mission to build national mining networks, increase sustainable mining research, and scale up/commercialize high-impact mining technologies.

BRIMM is looking for a business development manager to work with the local mining industry and government contacts along with the MICA team and their connections across the country to support the commercialization of innovative products and services that Canadian subject matter experts can deliver to the global mining industry. This person would also be responsible for identifying opportunities for, developing and delivering MICA-related events within BRIMM.


Organizational Status

This position reports directly to the BRIMM Director and works closely with all BRIMM researchers and staff and MICA-CEMI staff and partners.

The Business Development Manager, in acting as the BC & Yukon Regional Lead for the MICA Network, oversees communications, engagement, research, data management &, reporting, as well as strategy development for the relationship and member portfolio. The Business Development Manager will proactively identify and lead opportunities for improving stakeholder engagement and identify new members, associates and partners for the MICA network.

The Manager is responsible for network member and member project support, providing the delivery of MICA Network and BRIMM related programming, and development of new engagement strategies to maintain existing relationships including formal partners, ecosystem partners, BRIMM researchers and other stakeholders.


Work Performed

Member and Partnership Lead Generation and Management

  • Manage the relationship portfolio of MICA network members in the region, outreach and relationship management with corporate, strategic partners and ecosystem partners by leading the engagement and stewardship plan.
  • Develop a strategic plan for outreach and ongoing relationship management, towards expanding the member network and meeting the commercialization needs of SME network members.
  • Develop an annual workplan to include ongoing and specific projects to meet strategic service goals. Manage the portfolio of business development projects in the workplan
  • Together with MICA-CEMI staff, create and support onboarding processes for call for proposal project submissions, onboarding of new members, making referrals to mining company member prospects.

Business Development and Ecosystem Outreach

  • Develop outreach and new member engagement activities. Interacts directly with innovation ecosystem organizations, research institutions, government agencies, and with dozens of scientific founders of ventures.
  • Facilitate the strategic conceptualization of outreach, member engagement and knowledge sharing activities, as well as delivery and management of the project progress including establishing project timelines, milestones and deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities and design events to foster connections and collaboration between members, partners, ecosystem supports and industry; facilitates introductions and information sharing.
  • Liaise with ecosystem partners including centers of innovation, research institutions, incubators, accelerators and cross sector tech associations to build innovation synergies and to identify areas of collaboration.

  • Support MICA Network Global Partnering initiatives by working with MICA Network Global Lead, to facilitate introductions and tours for visiting delegations. Share information to regional members about global opportunities.
  • Works with BRIMM, UBC and other MICA partners on various other innovation projects

Ecosystem Monitoring and Reporting

  • Track metrics on member and ecosystem engagement and identifies areas of opportunity to add additional value. Designs and manages data management systems.
  • Create analytical tools and evaluation frameworks to improve engagement tracking and outcomes that contribute to overall innovation ecosystem health Make recommendations for products and services to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Maintain a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) database
  • Review, track and report on MICA network KPIs, and delivers quarterly progress and financial reports to BRIMM and CEMI. Makes recommendations for opportunities to pursue and flags emerging risks that may negatively impact efforts or reputation.
  • Conduct qualitative studies/services to identify current state of member and prospect experiences - to identify key leverage areas for supportive activities for members and researchers. To improve overall unit and network effectiveness;

Knowledge Management, Promotion and Social Media

  • Create a Knowledge Management strategy and related systems to support the regional network members, MICA partners, and ecosystem partners through optimal flow and exchange of data, information and shared knowledge
  • Develop a marketing communication strategy that leverages social media tools to promote and support of MICA members, network and ecosystem partner activities, BRIMM research, and relevant mining ecosystem stakeholders.
  • Write articles and deliver presentations to highlight network activities and member success stories, and network opportunities.
  • Represent the MICA Network and UBC BRIMM at all events.

BRIMM - MICA Operations

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new policies and procedures that will help to enhance and strengthen BRIMM and the MICA Network brand image, community contribution, stakeholder relationship and mission.
  • Attend MICA Network meetings and all-partner meetings.
  • Attend BRIMM operations meetings and follows UBC administrative protocols.
  • Manage all workplan project activities, logistics, contracts, budget and reporting.
  • Recruit and directly supervise any contractors or contract staff engaged for delivery of annual workplan activities

Develop relationships with mining-related groups in the region by:

  • Engage in outreach to research-relevant industry and government groups
  • Develop and implement an industry and government outreach plan
  • Identify and connect with supporting organizations in the innovation ecosystem
  • Identify mining industry strengths within our region
  • Support and foster pre-existing relationships with these groups
  • Foster a community of practice among innovation managers in the region
  • Represent the MICA Network and UBC BRIMM at all events

Collaborate across the MICA network

  • Learn about and follow MICA protocols regarding communication networks
  • Engage regularly with other regional partners and the network as a whole
  • Discover new leads within our region that can be shared across the network
  • Conduct low touch and high touch research in support of network members

Plan and coordinate BRIMM MICA events

  • Research and Identify pre-existing events that can include MICA elements
  • Plan separate MICA related events as needed
  • Coordinate with central MICA network to plan, organize, and promote these events
  • Participates in the planning, organization and execution of MICA events, across multiple venues including critical partnership and marketing events.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

  • This position is critical to the development and continuation of the BRIMM and MICA partnership, and their relationship with BC- and Yukon- small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Decisions strongly impact the reputation of MICA, BRIMM, and UBC.
  • Consequence of errors could adversely affect the credibility of BRIMM, MICA and the University. Errors could have a significant impact on our ability to attract and retain industry funding and support. Incorrect approvals of actions or inappropriate advice can have financial and legal implications to University. Misinterpretations of policy can be precedent setting and lead to appeals and grievances.

Reports directly to the BRIMM Director and works independently under broad directives from the BRIMM Director with little supervision

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of related experience in an appropriate business specialization, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
