Main Purpose & Function

The Sewer Cleaner Assistant assists with the operating and maintaining a combination sewer cleaners used to clean and flush storm and sanitary sewers, pump and clear catch-basin sumps and leads, provide hydro excavation work and support various emergency response plans in troubleshooting main-line system blockages and hazards.

The position reports to the Sewer Cleaner Operator (Equipment Operator IVb).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates a tandem axle truck with specific and specialized cleaning equipment associated with high pressure hydraulic main-line cleaning and hydro-excavation work.
  • Follows safe work procedures, standards and regulations, performs pre and post trips and helps with daily, weekly, monthly preventative maintenance duties of the vehicle such as greasing, checking and changing filters, inspections etc.
  • Performs confined space entries as required by Worksafe BC and City of Vancouver
  • Responds to emergency duties on an "on-call" or standby" basis
  • Assists with maintaining the inventory of tools, equipment and materials
  • Assists with the light maintenance and operating adjustments required to the assigned vehicles
  • Reports any mechanical deficiencies to the immediate supervisor and to Fleet and Manufacturing Services for corrective action.
  • Documents daily crew talks, tail-gate talks and assesses risks prior to commencing work
  • Acts as and/or provides relief for the Sewer Cleaner Operator as required and participates with work crews in all aspects of the day-to-day operations and maintenance and capital works undertaken by the City.
  • Responsible for general housekeeping and cleaning of assigned vehicles.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of grade eight and considerable experience in the operation equipment such as a combination sewer cleaner, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing, maintaining and making minor repairs to equipment operated.
  • Considerable knowledge and ability to read and interpret maps, measurements, depths, diagrams in order to trouble shoot system blockages and failures
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices and the rules of safe operation of sewer flushing, cleaning and hydro excavation equipment
  • Knowledge of all hazards of the required work and to practice safe work procedures and follow all applicable WorkSafe regulations
  • Understanding of the workings of the sewer and drainage system including cleaning force-mains and wet-wells
  • Good problem solving, troubleshooting and conflict-resolution skills
  • Skill in mechanical aptitude and ability to maintain related equipment
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, prepare and maintain work records and forms from plans and sketches.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, direct, instruct and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise considerable independence of judgment in dealing with assigned tasks
  • Ability to openly learn new techniques and skills related to the work
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to recognize and troubleshoot potential issues related to the operation and maintenance of the sewer infrastructure

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 3 BC Driver's License with Air Brakes or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • No more than 2 infractions in 2 year or no more than 4 points in 2 consecutive years
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 2 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail
