The Opportunity: McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for a Field Surveyor to join our Construction and Engineering Surveys team in Vancouver, B.C. Reporting to the Division Manager of Construction and Engineering Surveys, you will be a key surveyor in servicing civil and structural projects within the Metro Vancouver region, including, but not limited to, residential, arterial and highway roadworks, buildings, minor and major utilities, airports, parks, recreation and port facilities. Further opportunities to work remotely are available as well.
What You Can Expect:
Experienced candidates will be given a vehicle, equipment, and the opportunity to work very independently, with support as needed
Training and mentoring will be provided on McElhanney systems and field/office procedures
A workspace, if necessary, will be provided in our Vancouver or Langley office
While mostly a field survey position, there is opportunity to do a great deal of office technologist work, i.e. planning, prepare files for field use, post-process field data, draft to some degree to assist final drafting; tasks that will support independence
You will work alongside a great team of surveyors, engineers, biologists, technologists, and support staff throughout the company on a wide range of exciting projects. We deliver survey services to almost every project where this discipline is required, for exceptional clients
With respect to out of town or remote work, opportunities are endless. We service numerous transportation, mining, utility projects across B.C. and Alberta. Projects will include shift work for extended periods of time while other smaller project will vary in length from 3 days to 2-3 weeks
The physical requirements vary between projects, and we staff these accordingly so ensure safety
An assistant will generally be provided, however there are opportunities to perform as a one-person crew
What You’ll Be Doing:
Perform field surveys as per standards provided using RTK GNSS, total stations and digital levels. This may include surveys for engineering design, construction related as-builts and layout, control traverses/networks, deformation monitoring and various legal surveys
Assist Division Manager in project operations to maximize efficiencies with respect to procedures, workload, staffing, equipment, safety, quality
Supervise and mentor junior field staff to assist with professional development and foster an engaged culture with strong technical capabilities
Represent McElhanney to clients, businesses, and professional associations to enhance McElhanney’s positive public profile
What You’ll Bring:
A strong work ethic and attention to detail
Ideally a post-secondary degree or diploma in geomatics, however a full understanding of coordinate and plane geometry, the correlation between measured angles and distances and coordinates, (the ability to visualize in 3D space), and the knowledge of how to apply and record the collection or layout thereof in the field is the predominant skill
Minimum of 2 years’ related experience in a similar role
Ability to work overtime when required with the understanding that the workload will fluctuate, and support is available
Familiarity with high-definition scanners would be an asset
Must possess and maintain a valid BC driver’s license with a clean driving record
Good Communication Skills
Willingness to work in varied environmental conditions for extended periods and varied hours
