This position has a 12% monthly Sub Head premium amounting to a monthly salary of $7,586.88 - $8,093.12 plus a Grade A Gasfitting Ticket premium of $3.30 per hour.

Job Summary
Gas Service Technician has overall responsibility for the organization and direction for the work of Gas ticketed trades which include Plumbers, Steamfitters, Apprentices and external service providers engaged in the installation, maintenance, inspection and repairs of UBC Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) gas fired equipment assets. This position also participates and provides input to planning and scheduling preventive and predictive maintenance and ongoing training needs of workers and apprentices.

Reports to the SubHead Trades - Plumbing and Mechanical
Work Performed
Supervises, organizes and allocates the work of assigned personnel. Monitors safety and quality of work and takes remedial action as required or recommends solutions verbally or in writing. Works collaboratively with operation and maintenance planning teams, cross functional trade Heads and service contractors to provide direction and guidance, and works to ensure critical gas fired assets are operating, maintained safely and efficiently according to regulations, policies/procedures.
Supports operational teams through regulatory equipment inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of building mechanical systems and associated equipment within SHCS facilities including all gas fired boilers and equipment within critical campus facilities including service frequency scheduling and work execution.
Provides technical assistance to operational teams including training. Deals with day-to-day on-site problems related to gas fired equipment by initiating appropriate action to correct the situation.
Leads and participates in or performs the work of Gas A and B ticked trades working with a wide variety of gas fired equipment technologies, analyzes, trouble-shoots, repairs, and restores equipment & systems to full operation and recommends revisions/replacements when necessary.
Executes the gas equipment preventive maintenance strategy developed by the Maintenance Planning team and works to continuously improve process, service levels and documentation.
Works alongside trade Heads to train, supervise, and coach employees and works towards resolution on any staffing issues that arise. Openly encourages other crew members to voice their ideas and concerns. Utilizes strength of team members to ensure departmental objectives are being met.
Develops and maintains cooperative and productive working relationships with crew members and leads by example, fostering a cooperative and respectful work environment for their crew.
Establishes and maintains relationships with stakeholders at the University. Collaborates with maintenance and operational teams to share information with crews and leadership and readily determines to whom to go for relevant information. Partners with trade Head, SubHeads and crew members to achieve expectations.
Works alongside trade Head and SuHeads in participating in the performance management and performance evaluation process as required.
Prepares cost estimates for jobs and orders required materials. Checks to ensure that work is completed in accordance with requirements and specifications.
Maintains work function related records, such as, timekeeping, costing, tools, equipment, work assignments and historical asset data.
Ensures that employees under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner and in accordance with all normal safety standards and practices and university and departmental policies and procedures.
Responds to trouble calls and emergency call-outs and coordinates with various trade teams.
Ensures equipment is maintained in good safe working conditions. Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Makes decisions regarding the organization and allocation of trades and labouring work and acceptability of work performed for assigned area and/or crew; inappropriate decisions may result in service delays, costs and possible safety issues. Errors in judgement could result in damage to University assets and/or an unsafe work environment, thereby increasing the chance of injuries.

Organizes, allocates and supervises the work of assigned crews which may include Gas A and B ticket employees within the operations and maintenance teams.
Minimum Qualifications
A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Steamfitter, BC Cross Connection Control certificate, valid BC Gas Fitter B license with electrical endorsement, a valid BC Driver's license and a minimum seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A trade certification to journeyperson level as steamfitter or plumber. A valid TSBC Gas A ticket required. Knowledge of Power Engineer, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation. Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems an asset. Ability to prepare cost estimates, maintain records and write reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to adapt to changing workload priorities, effectively reprioritizing or deferring tasks in line with operational and strategic goals. Ability to effectively train, supervise, and motivate employees. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to provide quality service to customers and effectively resolve complaints in a courteous, calm, and patient manner; exercising sound judgment. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with team members and to lead by example; fostering a cooperative and respectful work environment for their team.
