Job Summary
This position performs skilled tasks for the operations and maintenance of roads, utilities, landscapes, building services, and waste management, and supports specialized services in moving and events.
Organizational Status
A Labourer 3 works independently on specific tasks or within a team across the Facilities departments.
Work Performed
Performs manual (physical) tasks related to asset management and services to ensure the campus is safe, accessible, and functional to meet the campus community needs.
Required to work in severe weather conditions, may be exposed to odors, loud noises, or other environmental factors. Required to work in confined spaces and at elevated locations while complying with WorkSafeBC regulations, UBC policies and procedures. Training is required to maintain tickets and certifications for work assignments including but not limited to confined space entry, lockouts, fall protection, traffic control, asbestos abatement, and driving.
Operates light, medium, and heavy vehicles, operates specialized construction and maintenance equipment required to fulfill all aspects of the assignment. Examples include, but are not limited to, jack hammers, tampers, bobcats, backhoes, all-terrain vehicles, snow clearing equipment, hiabs, street sweeper, power washing equipment, scaffolding, mowers, lawn trimmers, hi-lifts, or other relevant equipment.
Performs regulatory asset inspections, condition assessments, and reporting using asset management hardware and software. Required to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Assignments may include:
Road and utility infrastructure preventative maintenance works associated with surface works, underground utilities, pump stations, street furnishings, and water features. Conducts inspections, repairs, removal, replacement, installations and minor construction works.
Landscaping and turf management - assists in all aspects of landscaping including lawn care, turf management, watering/irrigation, tree care, weed mitigation, and garden bed maintenance.
Moving and Event Service - furniture assembly and disassembly, and equipment and material moves varying in scale and complexity. Supports major event setups on campus such as exams, convocation, and other relevant requests.
Waste Management - Collects waste, recycling and organics from residential and academic areas using assigned collection routes. Lifts and empties bags and wheeled carts onto collection trucks and empties curbside waste containers using automated or manual collection methods, and washes and sanitizes carts. Provides swamper support to equipment operators and may be assigned to work at waste facilities. Tracks and monitors data for billing and waste diversion reporting.
Building maintenance and project support - assists with general trade support like construction demolition, scaffolding, complex rigging, coring, asbestos removal, contractor access, insulation, preventative maintenance works, and other relevant tasks
Consequence of Error or Judgement
Determines the safest and effective way to perform skilled tasks and operate equipment; incorrect decisions results in workplace injuries, customer service delays, impacts to infrastructure and regulatory compliance, and the ability to maintain a safe environment for the campus community.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of a shop Head/Sub-head and may take directions from a team lead according to established procedures within relevant shops.
Supervision Given
Will help onboard new employees, train, or guide the work of seasonal labourers, or crew members in an assigned area as required, and responsible for safe work practices.
Minimum Qualifications
Secondary school education and/or completion of high school, valid BC driver's license or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Air brake ticket is an asset. Ability to follow instructions and communicate with other staff and the public in a positive and courteous manner.
Demonstrate the willingness to learn and keep informed of any operational and safety related requirements.
Physically fit, ability to lift 50lbs, and able to perform all duties.
