Reporting to the Technical Director, Processing, the Manager, Metallurgy is responsible for overseeing metallurgical and mineral processing aspects including new mine project developments, expansions or modifications to existing operations, feasibility studies and opportunity evaluations. This outstanding individual also has the responsibility of supporting Teck's operations in addressing short-term specific issues of a technical nature. Operations support activities extend to the assessment of operational performance and participation with site-based teams towards the implementation of technologies, methods, and practices to assist in the achievement of production targets and operational excellence.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with diverse teams and further act as a mentor to a team of senior-level technical staff to support overall project goals and metallurgical and process engineering objectives. In doing so, the role is pivotal towards ensuring operations and projects are delivering the technical solutions to optimize design and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Implement, demonstrate and maintain Teck's dedication to health, safety, environmental and community protection
  • Develop metallurgical test work programs to advance process flowsheet design, including bench scale and pilot plant programs
  • Design and select process configurations for new project flow-sheets
  • Develop process design criteria, equipment sizing and selection
  • Interact with geologists to identify material types in a prospective deposit to assess the potential impacts of mineralogical variability on flowsheet performance
  • Coordinate process engineering aspects of new projects with service providers such as engineering firms or equipment suppliers
  • Provide technical support during the construction and implementation phases of projects
  • Coordinate and develop commissioning plans and assist with the start-up of new process facilities
  • Develop capital and operating cost estimates for mineral processing plants
  • Provide recommendations for overall project and operational business models, along with other fields to help ensure optimized development plans
  • Interact with Management, Operations, Maintenance, and Technical teams to address efficiency, recovery, and product quality production issues
  • Engage with operating teams in performance evaluations, root cause analysis, and solutions to prioritized issues in all process-related operating areas
  • Conduct appropriate budgeting and financial control activities within their area of responsibility

Qualifications

  • Be a registered Professional Engineer (or eligible for registration) with a minimum of 15 years experience
  • Have a high level of technical knowledge related to mineral processing of base metal and precious metal ores. Proficient in the latest technological innovations in mineral processing plant design
  • Encompass broad experience in plant operations in an operating setting as mill superintendent or chief metallurgist level. Operating experience including startup and commissioning is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with the ability to write clear reports and convey technical information to various audiences
  • Core unit operation expertise including crushing, grinding (SAG Ball), flotation, thickening and filtration
  • Familiarity with concentrator adjacent unit process and infrastructure areas like tailings operation, electrical and water supply is considered an asset
  • Proven track record in building relationships across multi-disciplinary technical and operating teams
  • Strong leadership skills and the capacity to coach, mentor, and manage individuals for future success and to ensure proficiency expectations are met or exceeded
  • Travel is required in support of project and operations activities

Salary Range: $157,000- $194,000

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
