Purpose of this position

The Rail and Gate Manager is responsible for the management of operational labour and equipment resources in collaboration with other area managers. The focus of this position is the yard and gate strategy development and optimization. The Rail and Gate Manager works with the internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective fluidity across quay, intermodal and gate operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day to day affairs of terminal operations to ensure the efficient utilization of labour and equipment to achieve optimum productivity and reliability of service to customers and terminal users.
  • Meet customer requirements to achieve the optimum service level conducive with maintaining ship schedules, while providing the vision and guidance to achieve safe productivity.
  • To ensure final stages of the expansion project with terminal operational fluidity, new infrastructure & processes and control room are complete.
  • Contribute to the continuous business improvement process, aligned with business objectives, by maximizing efficiency and effectiveness while considering commercial, operational and safety factors.
  • Provide leadership in personnel management to ensure that the Company's needs and requirements are adhered to, including hiring and discipline.
  • Ensure adequate resourcing to deliver operational requirements (absenteeism & leave plan management).
  • Provide leadership and create a rewarding team-based culture for the team, including mentorship and development of staff.
  • Oversee the Yard and Gate planning to support all modes of operations-vessel, rain, and gate to achieve maximum operational efficiencies.
  • Work with all stakeholders and customers to maintain the inventory levels to maximize throughput and reduce the dwell times.
  • Actively engage in new VBS and automated gate development.
  • Actively engage in the yard and gate optimization project.
  • Develop SME experts among the shift managers.
  • In charge of yard labour costs and budget compliance.
  • Develop the direct reports by training, coaching, and holding accountable.

Qualifications, Job Function, Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • A degree in business, operational management, logistics or other related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years' management experience within a terminal operations or logistics business.
  • Proven leadership capability, with the confidence to communicate with all levels of management and demonstrated success in dynamic environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of terminal safety and security procedures and protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of Terminal Operating System (Navis N4 & XPS), VBS (Vehicle Booking system), and other applicable software.
  • High level analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills, with emphasis on the data driven decisions.
  • Experienced negotiator and a self-starter with the ability to adapt to stressful environments by using a sociable but firm approach, as well as engendering trust and integrity.
  • Outstanding leadership skills and the ability to motivate, develop and encourage staff to positively contribute to business goals and objectives.
  • Strong commitment to client service excellence with the ability to build solid relationships.
  • Experience using collective agreements, dispatch rules, gang structure, and all government regulations regarding the handling, stowage and securing of cargo relevant to the yard.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Previous Canadian work experience or experience working directly with Canadian industries.
