Purpose of this position

The Operations Shift Manager, Stevedoring is responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of Stevedore operations relating to the discharge and loading of vessels. The Operations Shift Manager liaises with customers and manages employees, contractors, visitors and processes, adhering to safety and operating policies and procedures to ensure the smooth running of operations and equipment and meet and exceed customer and business requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure that the operations are performed and completed in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company standards, and health and safety regulations and policies.
  • Oversee the overall efficiency of cargo handling operations, including coordinating the various activities of different groups (including Foremen, Longshore employees, Customers, terminal, agents, Dispatch, Union) to maximize the efficient deployment of labour and resources.
  • Work under tight deadlines in ever changing operations requiring adaptation and the ability to make sound decisions on the fly.
  • Foster and enable positive and assertive levels of communication within the Operations team including the Foremen and Longshore workers; Customers; Agents and Terminal employees.
  • Manage and direct Foremen and Longshore workers, including: orientation, instruction; training; safe working practices; best practice cargo handling procedures; and discipline, to ensure that the Customers needs are met and the Company's requirements are adhered to.
  • Ensure that systems and procedures are followed and documented appropriately to enable the progress of operations to be monitored by other staff, customers and regulators.
  • Drive a performance management culture within the team and the workers ensuring that the team meet our safety and efficiency targets.
  • Advance agreed upon initiatives, propose new initiatives and adopt a sense of continuous learning and improvement.

Qualifications, Job Function, Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • A degree in business, operational management, logistics or other related discipline.
  • A positive, hands on approach and the ability to work as a team member.
  • Excellent people management skills with well-formed motivational skills, including solid negotiation, influencing, change management and labour relations skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.
  • Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
  • Comprehensive understanding of ship loading operations, vessel construction, cargo stowage, cargo securing and applicable regulations.
  • Solid computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the proven ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Flexibility to meet the requirements of a 24/7 operation with a fluid schedule.
  • Experience working in a safety-focused environment with excellent understanding of Health and Safety legislation and the ability to effectively communicate these values to the workforce.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Manager or Supervisor in a fast moving operation, preferably in a unionized setting.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Previous Canadian work experience or experience working directly with Canadian industries.
