Overview

Azure Edge+Platform [E+P] is responsible for Microsoft’s Operating Systems, IoT and Edge products, Engineering Systems, and Health Platforms that span cloud-to-edge and edge-to-cloud. E+P is the platform team for the company and the foundation upon which virtually every Microsoft product and service, like Azure, Xbox, HoloLens, Visual Studio, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Teams, is built. E+P products and services enable engineers to build out, deploy, manage, monitor, and secure Azure, Windows, and the rest of Microsoft. Additionally, E+P is responsible for several multibillion-dollar businesses of its own including Windows and Azure Monitor. E+P’s mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more, meeting them where they live, work, and make decisions – at the edge.

Engineering Systems [ES] is a team in Azure Edge+Platform that builds and operates the Engineering System for two of the largest businesses at Microsoft: Azure and Windows. We provide our engineers, who work on code ranging from Azure Services to Windows and Linux based products, with tools and services to empower them to deliver world-class quality and secure products, with efficiency and high developer productivity, in a fiscally responsible way. This in turn helps enable Microsoft to deliver more functionality, of higher quality, with better security, and do it faster and more economically.

About the team

We are a diverse and inclusive team of software engineers who work on tools and services that provide reliable compiler toolchains to build Windows and Azure. We also create tools to analyze source code, project configurations, and binaries, to improve the quality, reliability, performance, and security of Microsoft's products. As part of the team, you will work on the entire breadth of the Windows and Azure code bases specializing in looking behind the surface of application failures and test bugs to locate hard-to-find compiler code generation issues and subtle incompatibilities in post-binary build tooling.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security sceenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

    This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with C++ development, including compiler and linker features and configurations, as well as assembly language for multiple architectures.
  • Experience with debugging and resolving complex technical issues, particularly when the areas are not well-understood.
  • Proficent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • A growth mindset and a willingness to learn new things and take on challenges.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $83,600 - CAD $159,600 per year.

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer II on the Engineering Platform team, you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and deploying tools that analyze code projects, configurations, and binaries.
  • Deploying new compiler toolchains into Windows and Azure build systems, as well as investigating and driving resolution of regressions.
  • Collaborating with other engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to understand the requirements and deliver the best user experience for engineers and stakeholders that use our tools and services.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues and bugs in the compiler toolchains and code quality tools, frequently in unfamiliar code.
  • Researching and exploring new technologies and trends that can improve code and binary quality and reliability.
