Main Purpose and Function
The Tree Pruner II is responsible for pruning and removal of boulevard and park trees using power saws and otherhand tools. Work is carried out using a boom truck with an aerial bucket extension, climbing trees or using ropes, and safety harnesses.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Tree Pruner II is responsible for pruning and removal of boulevard and park trees and assisting in tree planting and removal operations, cable and bracing, root pruning and performing heavy manual tasks related to the work. This position is responsible for operating an aerial bucket truck which may be in close proximity to power lines.

The successful candidate must have knowledge of tree pruning and removal techniques as required. This is hazardous work performed under the direction of a superior who evaluates the work during progress or upon completion for the attainment of desired objectives and adherence to required safety procedures.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10 plus considerable experience as a Tree Pruner I and experience in the operation of the lift truck; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience is desired
  • Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia
  • Power Systems Safety Protection (PSSP)
  • Technical Training of the Level 1 Utility Arborist Apprenticeship
  • Level I First Aid Certificate

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of tree pruning standards
  • Working knowledge of tree species planted in Vancouver and their growth characteristics
  • Ability to perform hazardous climbing and pruning tasks at considerable heights above ground
  • Ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions
  • Ability to deal courteously with enquires from the public
  • Ability to keep simple records related to work performed
  • Ability to operate light and medium sized trucks safety and efficiently
  • Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used in tree pruning and planting work
  • Skill in the use of ropes and safety harness used in climbing trees
  • Skill in the operation of an aerial lift truck and brush chipper
  • Skill in the operation and servicing of equipment used in the work and in the use of tools used in minor servicing and repair tasks

Drivers License and Record Checks

Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:

  • Copy of your three-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting
  • Copy of your three-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting
  • If you have less than three years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
