Reporting to the Coordinator, Applied Research Projects, the Applied Research Technologist II (ART II) is a key member of the leadership team, liaising directly with industry partners/clients, faculty, and students on a wide range of projects and technical tools. The ART II participates on multiple concurrent projects undertaken by Camosun Innovates and performs activities in support of technical product development related to Applied Research projects.
The ART II performs core duties as well as one or more of the specific technologist duties listed below. Some cross-over of duties may occur.

TYPICAL DUTIES
Core Duties
  • Acts as a primary contact with local industry/community partners with regard to project needs, project scope, milestones, and technical activities related to assigned projects as directed by Coordinator;
  • Oversees activities of students on applicable projects in conjunction with the Coordinator and Camosun Innovates faculty, including ensuring timelines and budget are met;
  • Develops the knowledge and skills students through demonstration of, and guidance on, proper and safe use of specialized equipment/software;
  • Participates in presentations to clients and/or students as conducted by Coordinator;
  • Interprets and ensures compliance with codes, regulations, by-laws, and other applicable legislation governing the project deliverables;
  • Maintains and repairs equipment, computers, and software in their area(s) of expertise, including ensuring appropriate product certification compliance where applicable; liaises with Information Technology Services (ITS) and as necessary, with applicable vendors/suppliers on repair and/or warranty issues and to ensure relevant maintenance contracts and software licensing is current;
  • Calibrates, operates, maintains, and/or repairs a wide range of equipment associated with their area of expertise such as, but not limited to, five-axis machining centres, laser cutters, waterjet cutters, 3D scanning equipment, software applications, etc;
  • Designs products associated with their area of expertise such as but not limited to manufacturing equipment, mechanical assemblies and parts, PCBs, computer software and hardware, data tools, high-voltage devices/applications, etc., while considering the associated properties, methods and requirements of the desired components;
  • Acts a resource to the team in specific area of expertise with knowledge of applicable materials, processes, and equipment;
  • Ensures students and other team members are aware of the safe operation of industrial equipment related to the specific technical area;
  • Ensures team members are aware of the safe and appropriate maintenance of equipment related to the specific technical area;
  • Initiates and supports continuous improvement of relevant processes;
  • Attends and participates in weekly management and other applicable meetings;
  • Under the direction of Coordinator, provides effective and efficient customer service to industry clients, the department, College faculty, and College students;
  • Provides operational support for department and college initiatives and outreach to industry partners such as but not limited to, participating in open houses, career fairs, Tech YYJ, Techtoria, etc. as an operational resource;
  • Generates quotes and invoices related to current projects in preparation for processing
  • Provides technical expertise into the preparation of grant applications to expand infrastructure and to secure funding for projects that support regional industry partners and communities;
  • Tracks progress and work performed of specifically assigned projects associated with their area of responsibility. (project milestones, costs, and scope) utilizing project management software;
  • Conducts tests, elicits feedback, collects data, analyzes, and interprets information related to area of expertise, and provides briefing notes for presentations, proposals, and recommendations;
  • Assesses deliverables to ensure client expectations are being met;
  • Provides feedback to Chair or instructors in regards to student assessments;
  • May perform duties of the Applied Research Technologist I as required, such as but not limited to:
    • identifying and sourcing parts from distributors for specific projects and upon approval from the Coordinator, order and/or purchase supplies utilizing established purchasing processes.
    • providing product design support for applied research projects being undertaken with local companies;

Working as part of a team, the ART II will perform one or more of the following areas of expertise:
Mechanical Engineering
  • Uses applicable shop tools to manufacture, repair and fabricate parts, including composites, using a variety of methods and tooling from a variety of material types;
  • Manufactures parts that may include high tolerances requiring complex and high precision setups, creative work holding, and non-standard practices;

Electronics and Computer Engineering
  • Participates in conceptualizing mechatronic automation systems;
  • Diagnoses electronic faults in a variety of apparatus using standard debugging tools such as software debuggers and hardware such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers;
  • Analyses, documents, develops/programs, debugs and tests computer software and hardware - including PLCs and discreet devices such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or ESP32 - thus requiring expertise in ladder logic, Linux, Python, and C++;
  • Works with digital communication protocols including, ASCII command protocols, I2C, SPI, UART, RS-232, MQTT, and RS-485 communications;

Computer Science
  • Assesses client criteria/needs with consideration for target platforms for media consumption (such as web browser, phones, tablets, computers) and plans the approach for development, considering program architecture (event-driven architecture), different programming languages (C#, Java, C++, and Python), engines (Unreal, Unity), and coding platforms (e.g. Adam, NetBeans, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code);
  • Considers real-world use and implications of developed media hosting and available hardware;
  • Creates graphical assets - images, 3D models, and textures;
  • Obtains user feedback through rapid cycles of development testing, documentation, and refinement to determine the most intuitive and effective user interface and experience;
  • Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
Qualifications
Diploma in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Interactive Media Developer, or Computer Science, and three years of related experience working in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment or a combination of equivalent education and experience. Related experience includes some combination of SolidWorks (a Certified Solidworks Professional certificate is preferred), Fusion 360, PowerMill, rapid prototyping equipment, 3D scanning & modeling software, CNC equipment, CAM software, programming languages, microprocessors, PLCs, networking hardware and software, troubleshooting software and hardware, modeling software, real-time engines, software for non-linear video editing and composting.
  • Knowledge of project management practices, including practical methods and software used to plan, track, and report on projects;
  • Understanding and knowledge of electrical circuits, electronic components, and control systems;
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students and overseeing learning activities;
  • Strong commitment to student learning and mentorship and training of highly qualified personnel;
  • Effective written and verbal communication, including presentations to diverse audiences;
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service;
  • Quick learner, keeping up with technology advancements;
  • Self-starter with creative thinking, thriving in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams;
  • Works with meticulous attention to detail;
  • Strong time management skills with the proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office suite and Teams;
  • Must be willing to obtain a Lift-Truck (Fork Lift) Operator certificate
