Description

The Janitorial-Maintenance Worker is responsible to provide day-to-day maintenance, program set-up, cleaning and grounds keeping duties to ensure the property is safe, clean and well maintained.

Hours:

  • Typical hours: 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday to Friday, availability for weekends, evenings and holiday work based on programming needs.
  • Hours may be flexible based on programming needs or with consultation with the Corps Officer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

  • Accept day-to-day instructions from the Corps Officer
  • Respond to emergencies on an on-call basis;
  • Report any problems or items requiring repair and/or maintenance that are noticed during the execution of duties.
  • Report Electrical and Plumbing deficiencies as appropriate
  • Safely store and maintain all related equipment and supplies in the appropriate storage spaces provided.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions related to the Workplace Health and Safety Committee.

Interior Maintenance:

  • Do minor repairs as necessary
  • Do basic painting as required.
  • Miscellaneous minor maintenance e.g. ensuring that interior lights are equipped with operable lights

Exterior Maintenance:

  • Keep the exterior of the Corps Building safe and in good repair;
  • Keep entrance sidewalks/walkways clear of snow and ice (shoveled or snow blower); apply ice-melter when contractor is unable to do so.
  • Miscellaneous minor maintenance, e.g. ensuring that exterior light fixtures are equipped with operable bulbs, cleaning of outside benches/picnic tables, patio furniture, etc.

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Maintain program vehicle by ensuring that vehicle repairs are completed.
  • Ensure fluids (oils, fuel, etc.) are maintained.
  • Clean interior and exterior of vehicle on an as needed basis

Cleaning:

  • Clean interior and exterior windows and doors, etc., Clean up and remove any spills, litter and other refuse found in the building.
  • Clean all common areas and rooms.
  • Refill cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Daily remove garbage and recycling and Organic bins.
  • Remove paper, litter and other refuse from around the exterior of the building, including the parking lot.
  • Wash and vacuum all floors weekly and as required per program needs.
  • Clean the Garbage room and bins as required.
  • Clean and sanitize all washrooms, before and after programming.
  • Clean, sweep, mop, and sanitize the Kitchen weekly.

Other Duties:

  • Write detailed incident reports and report serious occurrences immediately to the Corps Officer
  • Arrange for any property inspections, ie. Fire inspections, or hired trades as required.
  • Order supplies, as needed, in consultation with the Corps Officer or designate. Assist in setting up for building events and functions including Next Steps Resource initiatives.
  • Undertake any other assignments requested by the Corps Officer or designate which is compatible with this job description.
  • All Staff are required to attend and assist with any serious emergency on a 24-hour basis; including fire alarms, major floods, major disturbances, etc. when in the building.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a high school diploma
  • General understanding of basic maintenance/mechanical systems and health and safety related issues required
  • Valid driver's license with a driver's abstract

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of prior related experience including custodial, computer skills and general electrical/plumbing experience

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Should possess a caring and positive attitude
  • Personnel policies and procedures shall be in conformity with the Salvation Army's Employee Handbook.
  • Satisfactory communication skills which include an ability to narrate an incident
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army
