Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? If you answered yes, our Pinawa, Manitoba location is looking to fill the role of Civil Design Technician. The Civil Design Technician will work in a multi-disciplinary branch providing integrated project management, engineering, design and construction services for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at the Whiteshell (WL) site. Under general direction from the Branch Manager, the employee will contribute to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs of civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural and/or HVAC design. What will you be doing?

  • Being assigned as a design job leader including job management and execution oversight.
  • Providing assistance in resolving identified issues to prevent or mitigate loss of schedule and budget.
  • Providing job updates and status reports to management.
  • Guiding the work of several technologists, coordinating schedules and assigning tasks to reach an overall objective within cost, quality and time requirements.
  • Providing mentorship and technical oversight to junior technologists.
  • Checking the work of junior staff and providing guidance.
  • Preparing engineering drawings and related documents for civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural and/or HVAC design.
  • Preparing and revising CADD drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, Civil3D, and to hand drawings.
  • Conducting walk downs to support, troubleshoot, and make revisions to civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural, and/or HVAC systems.
  • Updating the Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) or the Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) documentation for equipment on Instrument, Valve or Equipment lists.
  • Identifying and requesting additional resources required to complete assigned work on schedule.
  • Providing support in the preparation of as-built drawings with a personal commitment to safety and a questioning attitude.
  • Showing attention to detail and accuracy along with being a self-motivated individual.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduate from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education and has more than six (6) years of relevant technological experience.
    • Secondary School graduation diploma or equivalent and has more than 10 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Experience and knowledge of design drafting technique and practice.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Produce neat, legible, and accurate drawings in reasonable time.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in both written and oral communication is required.
    • Follow and implement complex procedures.
    • Demonstrate initiative, motivation, and good people skills to work with peers as well as both internal and external customers in a team environment.
    • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
    • Interpret marked up drawings.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.” 

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive desk and computer work.
  • Occasional visits to any facility on the WL site, including radiological zones.
  • There is potential to enter highly hazardous environments and the requirements to wear personal protective equipment to mitigate any physical/health hazards.
  • Visual concentration is required for preparing and/or checking design drawings and related documents.
  • Project deadlines or emergent work may require the employee to work beyond the normal working day when requested and/or approved by line management.
